Do demos hinder or help Sales?

Usually, if I take the time to play a demo, I already planned on buying the game.

On a few occasions, I've been turned off by a demo (Dark Sectors) and once I bought a game despite a crappy demo and learned that the game was awesome (The Simpsons Game).
