Things can change as in companies go up and down.

If you only take market value as the measure of how big a company is then yes technically right now Nintendo is bigger than Sony.

Also they wouldn't spend a lot more on their consumers if they are trying to be as cost effective as they have been.

Right, I understood what you were saying. Things change. And again: that's true for any company at any time. Heck, the Bank of London, the second largest bank in the world, went bankrupt in the late 90s.

Right now, Nintendo is a larger company than the entirety of Sony.

Obviously Nintendo would spend on their consumers. Where do you expect this money to go Ck? I mean that honestly. They're raking in billions of dollars, while Sony and Microsoft lose billions. How would that money not ultimately be used on the consumer? What other purpose could it possibly serve?

Nintendo aren't a bigger compnay than Sony they are simply a more succesfuly company. Nintendo currently have a high profit margin which is very secure due to their current dominance in the console market. This in turn causes in increase in their market cap. The same effect can be seen with MS since their monopoly of the OS market measn they are certain to make huge profits each year giving them the 5th highest market cap in the world. MS are actually a smaller company than Sony since the size of a company is measured in their total revenues and not profits or market cap.

To address the point of wher the profits go. Some will go into investments since since solid>liquid. Most will go to dividends since shareholders are greedy bastards.

On topic. I feel that the online play of the Wii is secondary to the offline party play. Nintendo can afford to slwly introduce online play, original DLC and such since the offline party play os much more improtant than these things.

You're right, I was loose with my wording. Nintendo is both more succesful and more valuable, however.

I got it just today and am loving it, the News and Weather Channels blew me away. Youtube is great on the Plasma, They done a nice job of it if you ask me, however I am typing this with the Wii-mote and it's quite painfull! Someone send me a message ;) I have no online Wii buddies yet. Wii number: 7252 3311 9729 2058

Enjoy the Wii. I would give you some more encouragement, but I'm not very fond of mine. It's really cool at first, but on a 40inch HDTV that you use as a computer monitor, when you plug the Wii up to it... It just looks... uhhh... Idunno how to say it... but it looks... unaccptable.

Hell... the PS3 dont look as good as my PC on my TV... heh...

I've got a 50" HDTV with my Wii connected via component and it looks amazing, especially with the games that support 16:9 480p. Mario Strikers Charged Football is amazing (i am in Aus) and totally lagless.

Why would all this money Nintendo is making go into making big games when their biggest money makers are cheap to make minigame collections and other casual games?

I don't understand where this belief is coming from. If Nintendo sees that their new casual strategy is much more successful than their old, we will be lucky to see even a few bigger more traditional games from Nintendo anymore.

As in I don't expect another Metroid and Mario this generation after the new ones come out. Maybe a Zelda because the last one was a gamecube game.

Also saying that computers are so much more advanced into online games because they got steam and a lot of games that are online are temporary arguments because online gaming on consoles is only going to improve from here. I'm pretty impressed with how far it's gotten this quickly.

Who said that they were going to put the money back into Zelda or Metroid etc. specifically? This is what you said, and what I replied to: "Anyway, it is a great thing for Nintendo to do things on the cheap, but not really a good thing for the consumer."

The development of more casual and minigame collections (which are obviously only a portion of their development palate, but I'll humor you for now) is good for the consumer. If they weren't good for the consumer, people wouldn't be buying them, and Nintendo would stop making them.

What you apparently mean is: "Nintendo's development isn't good for me," which is entirely different and not relevant to a larger discussion of what many or most people want.

But of course, Nintendo will make more core titles beyond Metroid/Smash/Galaxy, so the point is moot anyway.

I haven't hooked ours up to the net yet, to my shame really, I just haven't got around to it. One question - can you dl free demos like you can with the PS3 and 360?

Nope! Although we don't have Wiiware yet, I doubt it will have demos either.

bak on topic...
i use news, weather, vote channels once in a blue moon too. like wat someone already said, i use my mobile phone if no pc is available, otherwise its pc.

IMO the wii news/weather, etc isnt realli aimmed at us... us as in people who live next to they computers.. i admit it. i live next to my computer. @work i'm on the comp. bak @home i'm on the comp. if i have nothin to do i'm on my comp. and i'm sure to some pplz they'll be living infront of the tv instead of the comp. and i guess wii channels is more beneficial to them. flick thru tv programs, check some news/weather/voting/internet during ad break. just my 2 cents. cuz to pplz like us who're basically always connected to the net via pc's, wii channel is a bit lacking.

For the moment, at least, I'm definitely with you. PC Gaming is so far ahead of console gaming in online connectivity that I don't really have much interest in buying a system and taking a step back. I view Wii online as distinct, and Xbox Live and PSN as mediocre PCs.

So let me get this straight, the Wii offers a distinct online experience compared to the PC while the 360 and PS3 online offerings are mediocre.  So I'm to believe that news, weather, and voting can't be done on a PC connected to the internet while the 360's online features are inferior to the PC?  Ok I'm curious, can you tell me what PC games I've played and how far I got in them?  No?  What about look and see what game a friend is playing right now or how far he is in it?  No?  What about a reputation system where other people vote on players?  No?  How about gaming zones where players are divided into recreation, pro, family, or underground so that they play people with a similar mindset?  No?  What about a gaming friends list?  So yeah the Wii offers a unique online experience and isn't inferior to the PC but the 360 and PS3 are inferior/mediocre?  Whatever.

On another subject I find it kinda funny that many Nintendo fans bash the 360 and PS3 for offering things like DVD movie playback or offering online movie/tv show downloads, because after all gaming consoles are supposed to be all about gaming, yet I don't see too many Nintendo fans in here bashing Nintendo for offering things like News channel and a Weather channel that have exactly what to do with gaming?  I mean we have dvd players to play movies, and television channels, newspapers, magazines, internet, to give us the news so why praise Nintendo for doing something that has nothing to do with gaming and bash Microsoft and Sony for doing the same?  Oh wait Nintendo is offering theirs for free right?  I mean Microsoft and Sony aren't taking a hit on every console sold and in doing so one can argue that they're the ones footing the bill for offering the feature of dvd movie playback (it's costing them a whopping $3.50 per console, actually even less than that because Sony has Patents and Microsoft has a special agreement in place).  I want to see the Nintendo fans that say "It's all about the games" come in here and bash Nintendo for their online non-game offerings, yeah I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Sorry but it borders on the idiotic to see people praising Nintendo's meager online offerings some of which has nothing to do with gaming and saying that they're very impressed.  I have to ask where these people have been for say oh.. the last 15 years when this stuff became widely available on the Internet.

I don't think Bod is praising Nintendo in the way you described.
For the best online media experience. You've got the PC.
Seconds are PS3 and 360.
Third came Wii with the most simplistic interface.

Different people like different things.

No doubt that Wii is lacking behind in online experience compared to the other 2. PS3 and 360, they are trying to become your multimedia center. And that's exactly what MS and Sony are trying to do.

Does that mean Wii's simplicity is a piece of crap? No. Take iPod for an example. The controls are simple and anyone could use it. Now, try and give a "complex" mp3 player to, say, your parents, and see if they'll like it.

I think many of you can't accept that different people likes different things and are trying to force your ideals onto others.

They should add a demo channel it's only good for the console and the guys trying to sell Wii games be it 1st or 3rd party.
