Forums - Nintendo Discussion - E3 Rumor- Hard Drive for Wii

You only actually get about 256 MB of storage on a brand new Wii, since about half of the 512 MB is reserved for the system's firmware. So that's not a lot of space to work with when we're talking Neo Geo and WiiWare games, but come on. A 2 GB SD card is 8 times the amount of storage, and you can walk into a Best Buy and pick one up for 25 bucks. Meanwhile, a 64 MB Xbox 360 memory card is 1/4 the storage of the Wii's internal flash, and retails for $40.

What the, a 200 MB firmware?!

Jesus Christ

When did I say Nintendo was wrong? All I said is that's probably what they think. I'm still not sure I even want online myself, and I'd rather avoid a HDD too if I can do so and still get the best gaming experiences a system can provide (which means I can't if I want a PS3 or 360). I really don't think the Wii needs a HDD, which is where I can't agree with you more, but the NG roms are much bigger than N64 roms on average even if I was wrong about the difference between the biggest (and that being because apparently no one ever used the full capabilities of the NG, which was over 1,000 Mbit)

You do not have the right to never be offended.

all this talk about Neo Geo games being too large... Hasnt anyone realised that compression methods have improved significantly since the N64 and NeoGeo were out? Thats why if you download OoT on the VC it doesnt take up all the memory, it takes up a fraction of what the original game took up.

I highly doubt that a NeoGeo game that was originally 700mb or whatever it was will be 700 mb when put on the Wii. The game will have been compressed significantly. Same with the WiiWare, the games will be (more likely than not) compressed, as more room = more games = more money.

Anyway, i think they should allow for games to be booted off of SD Cards :P

tk1989 - PS1 games on the PSN range from 200mb to 650mb. Some of them dont compress at all. And the small ones... I dont think filled up the CD.

Nintendo needs to do something about their data storage. my free motorstorm update is bigger than the Wii can handle. I have close to 1gb of pictures on my PS3, and when I start using it for my camera, that's gonna shoot to 10-20gb. High storage is your friend... speaking of which, I need to buy a 4gb MemoryStickProDuo, and a 8gb SD card.

Well, you also gotta remember that there are less needs for compression on the PS3, as it has a 60GB hard drive and Bluray. Games on the VC will ahve been compressed significantly because they have to be, and i bring back the fact that Zelda:OoT doesnt take up half the room on the Wii, despite the fact that it was (if i remember correctly) originally on a 256mb cartridge, which it filled up basically.

Kwaad, is this the PS3 hard drive storage space praise thread? It's about the Wii and it's need or not of an HD.Stop posting irrelevent stuf anyways, I even saw you somewhere gloating for sending Gay porn through your PS3.(That's what the 1 Gb of pictures are?) Nintendo already denied the development of a HD for Wii. A simple boot-up from the SD disc will suffice, plus charging for the DVD as a channel would take care of the licence fees. (5-10 bucks is still cheaper than a standalone DVDplayer, hope they see it that way.)

I agree with Fazz, I use a SD card of 2GB to store my virtual console games. I've got about 25 VC games plus 2 channels on the SD and just got under the 14.000 blocks while the card has a bit above the 15.000 blocks. Among those games there are 4 N64 games. When bigger Virtual Console games arrive some kind of update to exept bigger storage will be better. I'm not really fond of external storage hardware to be honest.

Kwaad's point's are valid and spot on, your comments about the porn are unnecessary and stupid. Wii needs more storage space so people can have more games simple.
Now the question is how does Nintendo achieve this without  passing on major costs to the consumers... I don't want this to go down like the X360 ($90 for 20GB HDD & $180 for 120GB) which is absolute theft, considering you can get a 500GB for Frys for $110.

But what did they use the space for in the PS1 era?  Redbook audio?  MP3 it, problem solved.  FMV?  I don't think WiiWare games are going to be laden with FMV, these are indie developers we're talking about.

You could fit 20 100 MB games on a 2 GB SD card that costs you $25.  That's way cheaper than a hard drive peripheral and it's enough space.
