"Warranty" is always extra and optional that is offered above the law requirements. Basically if your product is used as it should and a manufacturing error caused it, it doesn't matter whether it had warranty or not. The manufacturer (well, retailer actually) is required to fix it for you. Of course, it also depends about the age of the product. In electronics, it's usually seen as two years, that the product must be functional without any flaws (of course, this doesn't expire immediatly when 2 years is up).
If it was/is a potentially harmful defect (to the user) companies will take care of problems as quickly as possible. Can be many years beyond warranty.
I had a very minor defect with an old Sony Trinitron TV once, just one line which didn't show (only clearly noticeable when displaying Amiga's workbench), it was fixed for free many years out of warranty. The retailer said Sony takes much pride in the quality of their TV panels, just go to the local service center and they will probably just take care of it and they did.
