GC 2008: Far Cry 2 Console Impressions

Far Cry 2 has received its fair share of attention over the last 12 months, but with the game finally going into submission for the consoles this week, Leipzig may be its last major showing. For that reason, we couldn't help but swing by the Ubisoft booth at the Games Convention to see how the nearly finished game is looking. Thankfully it's more promising than ever, especially now that we've seen the level editor functionality as well.

Most of the vehicles in Far Cry 2 will have mounted weapons, allowing you to stop whatever you're driving and take out any pursuers. While on foot you can carry up to three weapons plus your machete, and as weapons degrade over time you'll often need to swap them out. It helps to know where the ammo dumps are, so they're drawn out for you on the map, and you have the choice of using them to stock up or using explosives to blow them up. If you blow up a supply of rifle ammo, for example, the explosion will send bullets flying in all directions and killing any surrounding enemies.

While this demo didn't show us anything we hadn't seen before, it was an encouraging sign of how the console version is coming along. The developer says that the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions have been developed from the same core build, so they'll all share the same features. While we didn't see the PS3 version, it's claimed that the aliasing on Sony's machine outperforms that of the 360, while on the PC it's all dependent on the specifications of your machine. The minimum specs for the PC are high, but it's easily one of the benchmark titles for this coming year and, thankfully, holds up well on the 360.

Perhaps the most important thing we saw at Leipzig was the map editor, which will also ship on all versions. You're given a half a square kilometer plot of land from which you can shape hills, create roads, and scatter vegetation. It looked easy to do all three from the demo we were given, as the vegetation will automatically disappear if you place a road or other conflicting feature in the map. The custom maps will work in multiplayer games only, so you have to create spawn points for people. You'll apparently be able to share your creations on Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network, and the PC, while players can rate how you did once they've played them. We also spotted one other juicy piece of information in the demo--there will be 'platform-specific content' coming in the future, so expect some Xbox 360 exclusives postrelease.

Far Cry 2 is shaping up as one of our most anticipated shooters of the year, and the map editor is sure to add to the game's appeal. The game was submitted to Sony this week for approval, and it will go through the same procedure for Microsoft next week. There's still no solid release date, but it's looking increasingly likely that we'll actually see the game before the year is out.

The developers didn't have a PS3 version on display at the day. So for all we know it could have better aliasing (anti-aliasing?), but a terrible framerate and sub-par graphics.

Overall though the game seems to be shaping up quite well with a robust map editor and multiplayer component. And the graphics of course are just beautiful.

I still can't help but be worried that we aren't seeing the PS3 version anywhere :/

" the aliasing on Sony's machine outperforms that of the 360 "

- does that really mean less aliasing (better), or could that actually mean more aliasing (worse) ?
.. the text isn't that clear here (in my opinion), although I'm pretty certain they really meant less aliasing

afaik there already were two videos of the PS3 version - one shooting scene (relatively old) and a flight with a hang-glider

Yeah, it also had me a bit confused, hence the question mark in the title.

However they said it "outpreforms that of the 360 version." You're hardly going to make a comment like that if it's actually worse. Probably some journalist who just knew the facts, but not the correct terminology.

I've been a multiplatform owner for a while. The differences between two versions of a game graphically are mute at best. Even when people make big deals out of them like the Orange Box, the differences are tangible.

Your preference on which version you should buy should depend on:
-Preference for Controller
-Whether you like free online or pay for subsription online
-Which system you prefer

This fanboy nonsense is rubbish.  I may be on the hype train for Little Big Planet and Killzone, but you have to be a lunatic to actually believe the graphical differences between the two version will be a game breaker for a single platform holder.

That is a bit comforting. Though I wont quit worrying before the game is actually out, or they start showing footage from the PS3 (specifically) at the same rate as footage from the 360

To me if one game did somehow have a noticeable egde over the other wouldnt it be the "better game" you would show? Plus it doesnt say who claimed it suppose to have better AA. Things like that are always very iffy someone claims this or that lol.

i think the ps3 version will technically be better simply because of an install, the developers already stated that they will take advantage of the ps3 hardrive.

il buy ps3 version.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

The Mercenary 2 developers also said something similiar quite recently:

According to Zamkoff "Sony's machine is better than the Xbox 360 when it comes to anti-aliasing"

http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-140079.aspx

Yet recently when they were showcasing the game, the 360 version was the only version on show.

I'm thinking it might simply be easier to showcase a demo on the 360 if you've also got a PC version in the works. (100% specualtion on my part though...)

By the time the game comes out the fall update will only be a month or so away and will allow you to install the game on your 360 hard drive to. Installing games will help with load time but really wont effect the actually look of the game. I will wait and judge formyself. By the way ofcourse skeeuk you will get the ps3 version lol did anyone think you would go for the 360 lol.
