It's less scary. I don't like Sonic, much less with Mario's hat, but the avatar doesn't look that bad. If you MUST choose a Nintendo avatar, you should choose this

I know you wouldn't put an avatar if it weren't from Nintendo, that's why I recommended Quilava, else I'd suggested something from Sony, but I know you wouldn't like it. Maybe this one?
