Forums - Gaming - What Does a $199 Xbox Really Mean? Is this the Beginning or the End?

I dont think motion control is the future of gaming, atleast not in the near future anyway.  No more than the Nintendo light gun or running pad was the future of gaming.

To be honest, we'll have to wait and see how the next generation or two pans out before we can comment on how Wii changed gaming.

SOME EXPERT GAMING SITES: The $199 Arcade is being sold at a loss ($239 to build) because it is going to be discontinued in response from game designers who don’t like being limited with the lack of a hard drive and a higher rate of customer dissatisfaction.

Can you provide a link to the $239 to build article?

I think the $199 arcade will hurt the PS2 the most.  It may force Sony to drop it to $99.  I don't think it will impact the Wii at all.  It should help Microsoft move some more 360's, but if it doesn't work they are in trouble.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

The hardcore said that price was the only factor Wii was selling so well over the Ps3... Sorry but 360 has other issues than just price (especially since it was cheaper than the ps3 and selling less anyways). It would make more of a difference with Wii vs HD if this were the Ps3 going head to head with the wii than the 360.

It might well be, but the gap's just too wide for that to ever happen. I'm sure the Blu-Ray alone would make it impossible. But it would be interesting to see.

Myself, I wouldn't take the PS3 over my Wii at any price. But sometimes in my dreams I see the two getting married and producing a Motion Plus machine with all the power of a PS3 and costing $249. It would be called the SWiiP (for Super Wii Playstation and pronounced SweetPea).

Don't suppose I'd better hold my breath waiting.

I'm giving you a link to a site that claims an even higher cost but has a much more thorough and thoughtful discussion on the topic. It's a very good read IMO.

( I can dig up the other again if you need but I went through about nine google pages.)

I don't know what will happen at all... The only guess I will take is that potential Wii buyers will get an Arcade, but the Wii wont feel the difference, because the demand will be so big anyway.
Oh, and LBP will be huge of course.

It will happen. Potential Wii buyes will take the Wii, btw.

I done a thread a while back in which an ms guy said that 75 percent of the units sold at $199 or less in the last generation.

Here it is.

So hard to say.

199 is pretty cheap with its current library.

Depends on the buyer really. I think I should have worded myself more clear looking back. "The only guess I will take is that a few potential Wii buyers will get an Arcade".

Sure, parents with below teen age kids will get the Wii in a heartbeat, but for someone like me (if we say I didn't already own a PS3), I would take the 360 over the Wii right now.

I remember the thread and there is certainly a lot of talk about the $199 sweet spot. Myself, I think you have to allow for the time difference and add a bit. Arguably $249 may be the new sweet spot and the Wii is fairly good evidence for it.
