Forums - Gaming - Comparing Exclusives:HD Console Graphics.

@ forevercloud3000

For Assassin's Creed apparently it makes a good difference to enable Full Range HDMI (if your TV supports this) and I agree some may be using slightly off color settings, as GTA IV is less dark for me than in those comparison videos.

I performed a random google search on terms "GTA IV" and "I played both versions" or "I have both versions", as I was curious to know what would pop up.

Results:

1) Firing squad:

"Look and sound of GTA IV is just about identical on both Xbox 360 and PS3, by the way. I played both versions and didn't notice any appreciable difference, aside from the faster loads on the PS3, which installs part of the game to the hard drive before you start playing. If I had to pick one or the other, I'd go with the 360 edition solely for the exclusive online content coming out over Live starting this August. But if you've got both systems and don't care about the downloadable extras, pick PS3. I found the 360 game an incredible burden to my console, cranking up the noise of the fans and disc drive to vacuum-cleaner levels and causing two hard crashes during the opening cinematics"

2) Undefeated @ Boxingscene

"360 seems to lag a bit.. I played both versions... Both on a HDTV.. PS3 looks crisp.. Also when traveling at high speeds, you can see the diffrence in framerate."

3) BoogieJacket @ 1up

"I have bot systems. And I played both versions, so far. Yeah the PS3 looks(little) better. But besides all that, I think the PS3 version wins overall. I mean I know there is going to be DL content on the 360. But I got the PS3 version, becuase it "feels" more original. As far as the controlls, and the gameplay. And I think the free PS network makes a big deal too, for online play. I'm not hating on the 360 version, I just feel more comfortable on the PS3 version. "

4) ibozzy @ IGN

"I played both versions. I too like the PS3 version better."

5) GDMatt @ MyPS3.com.au

"I have both versions and they look almost identicle, just the 360 version is brighter and the PS3 version has better explosions."

6) Darkchyld_tn @ IGN

"I have both versions (PS3 and 360 so i can play online with friends who don't have both systems) and to me the PS3 version looks a little better IMO. looks a little more "grimey" for lack of a better term and that seem a little more fitting. i don't really like the glowing effect on the 360. but no matter what version you have. you can't go wrong."

7) Nom_is_Hyden @ slar.standlikearock.com

"I have both versions (got the SE PS3 as a b-day gift) & they're both very similar. "

8) nil102 @ avforums

"We tried both versions of the game through the same TV and marginally preferred the PS3 version although the difference is a matter of taste rather than technical ability"

9) raymondo @ avforums

"i have both versions, and after initially playing xbox version i switched to
ps3 version, mainly cos my mates who got this have ps3s for live play
it may look little blurier but runs better, loads quicker (try switching to map screen etc, its more responsive on ps) and has less texture pop up.
mate called in last night - he is a 360 man - played ps3 version and thought it looked slightly better. "

10) Stinky Magee @ Montreal Gazette:

"I am a stenographer by trade and as a person who spends his time tediously scrutinizing the minute details of short hand fraud, I can assure you that the graphics of the PS3 version of GTA 4 far surpass the cartoonist scribblings of its LOL inducing "competition", the has-been Xbox 360. I have both versions and there really is no comparison."

So, this seems a title not easily agreed on. One thing is sure, the 360 version isn't really widely regarded as being better, these were just the first results popping up in google (you can try it yourself to double check). Rockstar did a better job at porting their game from 360 to PS3 than various other game developers.

@ Squilliam

(the guys at Beyond3D all agreed on this, the source of resolution differences, it may well be the 360 version also scales to 720p but doesn't show the usual patterns associated with this). With regard to framerate I only saw a biased Eurogamer comparison comparing the framerate of the cutscenes. The PS3 version ran at roughly 24 FPS for these cutscenes, so on par with Hollywood movies.

Eurogamer comparison is based on stuff that is on Beyond3D(Or at least there was similar comparison on Beyond3D and PS3 version had lower FPS). And links about X360 version and scaling, ty.

It doesn't matter so much, the differences are minor and Rockstar performed a nice 360 port. IGN and Rockstar's founder preferred the looks of the PS3 version, with such facts there's always going to differences of opinion.

GTA IV does look a bit better over here than in that video.

Yeah celticlonewolf, how dare you use nothing but IGN or any official sony websites!

"If something is technically worse on PS3 -> no prob"

"If something is technically worse on X360 -> its definetly worse on X360"

@celticlonewolf

I am seeing a trend here though and that is there are people who think one system has better graphics than the other no matter what screen vids or anything els is presented.

Most of them are in denial all the time when it comes to their console.

See this one for example,

You know, I find those comparison videos fairly funny, as they always tip in the 360's favor in multiplats. Sometimes warrented, others questionable.

GTA4 and Assassin's Creed in particular. I work at gamestop. We get into heated debates all the time. When AC was first out and people said it looked better on 360 we tested the theory. The 360 version was indeed brighter. Then I thought..........one sec. I walked over to the game, went in the menus, and adjusted the lighting. Then they looked identical. GTA4 looks a tad blurry and darker then the 360 version. Mainly becuz of the PS3's auto blending techniques. The light can be adjusted in the PS3 version to give it the identical super intensive light as the 360 version. The blur , to me, looked to be on purpose by the developers, it gives a nice foggy look in good lighting(ala Heavenly Sword Style).

@forevercloud3000

How about info that comes from PS3 devs and even from the almighty sony? You believe it all? :)

MultiPlat is not the best way to determine console graphical superiority.

Why multiplat is only way to determinate console graphical superioty(When you really can't see it just by looking the games.)?

1. They utilize same amount of resources, unless other version is worse.

2. If theres something extra in one version, you will see it.

3. They have same camera angle and same animations, unless other version is worse.

4. They have same textures and so on they are similar,  unless other version is worse.

Probs with exclusives

1. They use very different meshes/textures/everything.

2. They have different camera angle different animations.

3. Basically they are nothing like similar.

And yes, X360 is kind of piece of crap and PS3 isn't much better either.

@ Deneidez

And what to do when nearly all multiplatform PS3 games are either on par or better (which will very likely happen for the long run). Wouldn't Madden 2007 comparisons been pretty useless in hindsight in terms of comparisons between system capabilities?

If so will you then admit you were wrong?

Early 360 ports used less PS3 resources, due to their game engines. For the long run the PS3 simply has more resources.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Again we are talking about here and now are we not. I cant say if the ps3 games in the next 2 years or so are going to be looking way better than the 360 I really dont know and neither do I give it any thought. The point is with what we have now or coming in the next 6months or more exclusive games on both consoles look great with both making a case of having the "best graphics".

They aren't right now, but when they are... Uhm? What there is to do? :)

When it came out it wasn't really useless comparison. It basically tells what you could get from both systems then.

If so will you then admit you were wrong?

Admit what? You can get (kind of) better results with PS3. Still I am not sure will we see those before next gen.

Early 360 ports used less PS3 resources, due to their game engines.

Are you sure? I think some used 'all' resources, but they just used it all 'badly'.

For the long run the PS3 simply has more resources.

For (very) long run yes, but how about while it really matters(and thats before next gen)?

The problem is "it will be much better", which isn't yet. Maybe in the future or maybe not, nobody knows what will happen. Lets just wait for those games where leading platform is PS3 and we will see will PS3 be better then or how soon it will be.

i have all 3 systems, and its quite clear on my hd tv that my ps3 has better visuals.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Why so eager to talk about them then?

No need to wait, due to obvious reasons game engines for high profile PS3 exclusives are being adapted faster.

I think Killzone 2 will be enough proof for most people, with regard to multi-plaform games I expect Final Fantasy XIII and a console port of Crysis to highlight differences. Crytek seems ambitious enough and probably won't settle if much more can be achieved technically.

Many have asked the same question... Actually you are the second one today. :D

Well, I am dev and I must know other platforms too. Also I need to know whats going on in game business in daily basis. If I must do something(because of my work) for PS3, I will do it of course. Still I am not convinced by either platform. (Wii could be fun to program.) Why I am chatting here and not making anything, compiling! , hehe...

(I am making gui for one simulator. Anyways, back to other questions.)

No need to wait? Afaik killzone 2 haven't been released yet and neither have been Final Fantasy XIII. Youre always ahead your time(And I don't mean that compliment. I think its just because it suits you better.). Btw, I am eager to see what they can include in console port of crysis(They really can't fit it all.). So... Theres still at least some time to wait before PS3 will show its 'superiority'(February 2009, says gamespot for killzone 2). Untill then... I am not convinced about that 'superiority'. :)
