Forums - Sony - PS3 success forces Valve to "re-evaluate" support for sony`s box

Why anyone gives-a-crap what half-assed ports Valve gives to the consoles is beyond me. I don't understand the appeal of playing Valve games on consoles, because they play like crap. TF2 on 360 is basically completely worthless, and the analog controls greatly reduce the uses of things like the Gravity Gun in HL2.

Seriously people fight over the pettiest crap.  You might as well fight over RTS games on consoles.  Who cares? It's still an RTS game on a console.  This is still a Valve game on a console, and if you think Valve in any way needs the PS3 or even the 360 you are absolutely bonkers.  Steam is worth 5 times the profit they'd ever make out of the consoles.

i would rather see gabe newell leave valve and return to ms, than support the ps3. or make a new studio and support just pc/360. why simple he hates the ps3 and has said he never wants to make a ps3 game, valve can make enough money supporting the 360 and the pc, without any support for the ps3.

I guess that Gabe finally pushed himself away from the table far enough to scooch closer to the computer screen to check NPD and see that PS3 is outselling 360, and it's also doing it handidly in Europe.

No matter how much you don't like it, the fact is that you can't ignore a growing number of people, especially with numbers PS3 is pulling, and proving that it can sell hardware, it's foolish to not develop on the platform. Especially when it pulls ahead of the 360, not publishing is going to be out of pure-fucking-stupidity or stubbornness because you don't like the PS3.

I love these sort of comments.

Gabe Newell may be fat but he's a hell of a lot smarter than anyone on this forum.

Remember that a shitty port of a Valve game is still better than 95% of the games on the market, Naz.

/care, never cared about valve

Btw, the whole premise of this thread is wrong. Valve was never forced to do anything, they also have a pile of cash and more coming in every day so its likely that they won't ever be forced to anything for a very long time.

Tease.

There were plenty of problems with the port. Does anyone refute this?

Easily the weakest version released due to technicals like frame rates, load times and connectivity issues with TF2. The only reason why it's still rated so high is because it's still Orange Box. And if a player has no other option but to play it on the PS3, it is still far better than skipping it entirely.

Point being, there was no excuse for the PS3 version to perform any worse. Especially when the hardware is capable of doing much better with the right development team.

In the future, it seems more likely than not that if Valve wants a PS3 version done to their standards, they'll have to do it themselves.

1) The port was the worst but in no way damaging in reputation... as it's still one of the very best games in the PS3's library and the PS3 is damn lucky to have that bad port.

2) Sure there was. It takes PC developers twice as much time and effort to work on PS3 develoment then 360. That's a lof ot extra development money. That and reason 3.

3) As Gabe said himself recently. There is a lot of stuff they want to do. However they don't do most of it as they have only 150 employees. Every bit of time they spend on a port or some other idea, the less time is spent on their known ideas. The longer it is for HL E3 to come out and other bigger more money making games people are looking for on PC.

There is more money in HL E3 for PC or other PC projects then there is LFD PS3.  Don't be surprised if he was talking about someone else being a port.

He was asked two questions.

Did you rethink your position on the PS3.  (That they should stop makign it!)

and

Is there a chance LFD will come out on PS3. (Not if they would make it.)

I mean they've also said they want to make Wii games.  My money is on them doing neither.

it's foolish to trash talk any platform for no reason.

True, but Gabe gave his reasons, and even as a PS3 owner I can understand his gripes with the console as we have seen the same ones from many other developers.

Gabe maybe be an ass but I will always side with his company when it comes to their games and their commitment to their fans. Thats right they care about the people who own their games. This is why all their major game updates are FREE and add new features or content.

Valve doesnt like the Orange Box port EA did for the PS3 and made them patch it. It was not EA's choice to patch the game.

thats cool that we're getting it and all but it better not be way after the 360 version.

Its the same with bioshock, its like a year later coming to PS3 and honestly who will buy it a year later?

If it came out near the same time i'd think about it, but i'm not buying it several months later.

Well... free on PC.

It's going to cost you on 360...

and PS3 isn't seeing those updates at all.  (Orange box.)
