Forums - Sony - PS3 success forces Valve to "re-evaluate" support for sony`s box

Does this mean Valve will have to put extra content on the L4D PS3? If they do, I know it will come out on Xbox live the same day. But it would be cool.

Would be easy enough to do. Just run a contest and use some user generated maps from PC.

I still doubt they actually mean THEY would do the port however.

He's just backing off Gabes opinion that the PS3 was such a disaster in design that it should still be canceled, they should stop producing it and offer the world an apology for wasting the customers and developrs time.

Seriously his comment was harsh.

But no one with the slightest bit of business savvy will turn down the opportunity to sell product to an expanding demographic within a market.

Sure, in the beginning it made less sense when the market was smaller and development costs were higher and the soft units being moved were lower, but since there is little likelihood that the platform is going anywhere but up, a re-evaluation is in order.

The question becomes whether re-allocating work resources (limited personnel) to that expanding demographic (PS3 market) will pay off enough to warrant taking the risk. And PS3 development has been shown repeatedly to be an extremely risky endeavor. It's expensive, and the payoffs in terms of commercial hits seem very mixed at best.

But if the PS3 market continues to expand at a faster rate than the 360 market, it becomes increasingly harder to keep the stubborn attitude that the platform is a "waste of time."

Haven't they already supported the PS3 by having EA make the ports? How many publishers have supported the Wii by hiring off-hand developers?

I think the assumption here is that Valve is considering doing the port in-house.

At this point, LFD is an unproven IP, so diverting resources for a PS3 port now is out of the question, but even having a port done by another studio could be too risky, particularly if it's done as poorly as the Orange Box EA port was.

A bad port would only hurt the game's image, as well as the studio's image for giving the green light on a sub par release.

I think Valve is a great developer. The more platforms they expand to, the better.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Being tied for the 6th best rated game in the PS3's library is considered bad?

There were plenty of problems with the port. Does anyone refute this?

Easily the weakest version released due to technicals like frame rates, load times and connectivity issues with TF2. The only reason why it's still rated so high is because it's still Orange Box. And if a player has no other option but to play it on the PS3, it is still far better than skipping it entirely.

Point being, there was no excuse for the PS3 version to perform any worse. Especially when the hardware is capable of doing much better with the right development team.

In the future, it seems more likely than not that if Valve wants a PS3 version done to their standards, they'll have to do it themselves.

Wow Valve consider making good games for ps3.

The game looks and sounds average at best, i even went to the site and read all about it and watched all the video's, after you guys said it was the best stuff ever. People are just going crazy, because OMG its valve. If any other company made it the game would get 5/10 max and be in the bargain bin before the weekend.

I'm pretty sure L4D will be a success just on PC sales alone. I can understand developers who were PC centric first favoring 360.

However, even when you're rolling in money you're in the business of making more, and this is simply noting that when a good multi-platform title can sell as well on PS3 as 360 why leave half the potential sales/profit on the table?

Assuming PS3 continues to grow install base well (which I'm pretty sure it will) and with ID aggressively aiming to get back into the engine middleware market with a new engine designed to be truly multi-platform, I think we'll see both Epic and Valve look to improve their abilities on that platform. Valve I think is the furthest away, as Source never seemed to take off as well as U3 engine for middleware sales, but I can't see them continuing to ignore PS3 is the sales are there to be had.

I wouldn't hold your breath though as it will likely be a slow transition. I bet they'll watch Bioshock sales on PS3 with interest - if it shows a strong PC/360 game can sell very well a year later on PS3 then I think the odds will shift from 50-50 to favorable odds for a PS3 version at some point mid to late 2009.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
