Title explains it all, for me. Its on attach rate really.
20% Attach rate = successful game.
So currently for wii, PS3 and xbox 360 that would mean
Wii = 6.2 mil
Xbox 360 = 4.0 mil
PS2 = 2.9 Mil
How about you?
Why must JRPG female leads suck so bad?

Varies by each games expectations, budget, and hype. Generally speaking though, the 1 million mark.
I think 750k total sales across platforms for a PS360 game, or over 1m for the bigger titles
i would have to say the 2 million mark. im not saying 1 million because some bad games have made it past the 1 million mark. 2 sets it aside from potentially good and a success.
btw you should fix ot from ps2 to ps3.
the nintendo wii will outsell the ps3 and the 360 combined by the end of 2008.
PS3 will out sell the 360 june 2010.
GOTY of 2008 is super smash brothers brawl.... hopefully.

For me it's a case by case scenario.
Depends on the developer, the franchise (new IP vs. sequel vs. licensed game), the development cost, the userbase of the console(s) it's selling for, and the developers expectations (when available).
For example, when a game like GTA4 costs a billion times more than GTA3 to develop, and is most likely not going to sell as much, the standard success metric gets a lot shadier.
However, some smaller games like Carnival Games and Cooking Mama are huge successes. Cooking Mama basically saved Majesco from the brink of death.
on whether and how much profit it has made. I work in the film industry and many people think some of these Multi million making movies have done well.
Chronicles of Riddick is a prime example. It so much to make, that even after having made over £100mil in box office sales, it still failed to make its money back and only done well through dvd, pay per view and merchandising.
games work similarly. They are a success, if they churn out good profit margins. It's not how many copies they sell, it's all about how quick they can recuperate their losses and make profit.
Sales mean nothing. The only thing that matters is profit.
Many great games with small budgets do not sell as well as mediocre games with huge budgets. Both might make money in the end, but only one is a truly good game.
A game is successful when it sells well, and is a good enough game for people to want more from the developer in the future. Profit+fans = success.
