Sony: Rock Band, World Tour Instruments Compatible

Hoping that you won't have to fill your living room up with a pile of plastic toys just to enjoy this winter's bumper crop of music titles? If you're a PlayStation 3 owner, you won't have to.

Sony said today on its official PlayStation blog that it has worked closely with the publishers of this year's drum-and-guitar games to ensure that every instrument is cross-compatible with the other two titles.

So, for example, if you buy Activision's Guitar Hero World Tour and its drum set (right), it'll work with MTV's Rock Band 2 and Konami's Rock Revolution.

In addition, Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour will work with Sony's first-party Singstar karaoke microphones.

"We’re still working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market, and we hope to have an announcement on that shortly," added Sony's Michael Shorrock.

Activision announced at E3 that the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero World Tour would work with Rock Band instruments, so this means that all console owners can now purchase new music games with confidence.

Um, except Wii owners. Hopefully Nintendo has been as diligent as its rivals.

We all know that the 360 version of the game will have support for all the others at least in Guitar Hero World tour, but it is now official that all games will work with whatever set you have. This includes the upcoming Konomi game Rock Revolution.

What I find most interesting is that Konami recently sued Harmonix for patent infringement for their instruments now everyone is working together and the lawsuit isn't in the news.

^There is a whole other ballgame with Nintendo. Harmonix decided that they wouldn't use the Wii remote standard with their instruments and instead did a paint and port of the PS2 instruments. I don't hold out high hopes for this happening for Wii owners unless they do a complete redesign of the Wii instruments for RB2.
