| MontanaHatchet said: Just consider that the 360 is a current generation console and not a "next gen" console. Along with that, you should also consider that the DS and PSP have dozens of million selling Japanese RPGs between them, and you didn't even specify home consoles. Besides that, Dragon Quest Swords has sold 700k with no PAL data included, and it likely had a FAR lower budget. And why is 800k a milestone? It maybe JUST broke even with numbers like those, and it hasn't even sold a million yet which is widely considered the definitive milestone for most games. So no, it's not impressive in the slightest. And considering all of the hype and marketing that went into it... |
So much bickering about terms? Everyone here is aware "next-gen" refers to the 360/ps3/wii and will continue to do so until the first successor is announced.
You are right that DQS has no PAL data, which kind of indicates sales have been less than stellar - otherwise it'd appear somewhere on the charts. There are tracked games with sales under 100k so...
Considering the dismal presence of jrpgs on next-gen consoles, 800k is a terrific showing and a milestone worth celebrating. It's certainly impressive considering the jrpg offerings on next-gen consoles.
I think it could brak a million.

Hahahahahahahaha, didn't make a profit??
Wow, you wanted this game to fail so bad that you're making up facts to make yourselves feel better.
First of all, 800k = sold numbers. Meaning it's shipped close to a million. That means a revenue of roughly $50 million. It's dev. costs were wholly paid by MGS and it was also published by MGS, meaning 1/5 of the revenue isn't lost to royalties. Actually, it essentially means that profits = revenue - (cost of development + production).
Development costs + marketing for Halo 3, biggest title on the Xbox 360 to date: $60 million.
Rumored development costs for FFXIII = $50 million.
Rumored development cost for KZ2 = $40 million.
So am I hearing this correctly?? Lost Odyssey, an unestablished franchise, without extensive CGI footage, with a licensed engine, somehow exceeded a budget of $40 million??

Quiet you, everybody knows jrpgs only turn a profit on sony platforms and the DS. Any jrpg released anywhere else is bound to both be moneyhatted and lose money.
I have no idea why this is A) a big deal or B) even good. I couldn't even make it through disc one with the stilted dialogue, the badly animated characters and the bland and sometimes awful combat. It wasn't the WORST game I've ever played but it was pretty damn bad. It is especially bad because these days games like Mass Effect and Persona 3 exist, so making a crap RPG isn't as excusable as it was in say the mid 90s when even games like Beyond the Beyond were passable (REALLY early PS1 game for those who don't know it). It wasn't Blue Dragon bad, but it wouldn't have sold even 100,000 copies if it had to compete with PS2 RPGs. Persona 3 is vastly superior despite being a newer "last gen" game. I was actually incredibly disappointed since I do like the Final Fantasy games (except 9 and 12 which were just OK) a lot, but Lost Odyssey isn't even in the same universe much less the same league as even the bad FF games.
I would be far more upset about the so called 360 JRPG bonanza if the games were any good. Maybe tales is the exception to that rule but thats mitigated by Disgaea releasing today which is WAY more interesting to me. Atlus games >>>>>>> Namco Bandai games. There's usually more gameplay in a single Atlus game then in 10 other RPGs combined (and unlike most modern RPGs they actually have some challenge in there!).

@Freebird
Since when does the developer get 50 dollars from each game sold? I thought it was far less, as I remember from the debates about how much MGS4 needed to sell.

More like you don't like classic turn based jrpgs. Guess you won't enjoy dragon quest battle systems neither...

Stilted dialogue? LO's writing was actually pretty decent by JRPG standards.
