Looks like an orthodox RPG

More information:

50% complete
Animated intro
There are combination attacks and support party members
"Battles are fast-paced"—you tap icons on the side of the touch screen
It seems to be a real game with 108 characters, although the headline is "The Chosen 108 heroes have been destroyed?!"

I'm not sure. Main suikoden games are usually numbered using roman numerals similar to FFs, but this title's descriptions sounds like it could be a main game.

Other observations include: The battle system is four person battle system, like Suikoden IV. As such,

it is a traditional RPG, not a strategy RPG like Suikoden Tactics. Unite/Combo attacks are confirmed to be in.

Looking at the status screen it appears traditional Suikoden MP is OUT, to be replaced with standard

MP numbers comparable to HP. Like in Final Fantasy VII, for example (and 90% of every RPG ever).

These are bad news, you can't strip a Suikoden game of what makes it a Suikoden. 6 player party is a must, without them you can't fully experiment with the huge cast of characters. And the Rune Tiers are the most distinguishable feature of the series after the 108 characters, you can't replace them with standard MPs! Hopefully the fame will turn excellent, but looking at it, my expectations have decreased. I hope I'm wrong and Konami can deliver a game that can stand up to the others

Yeah, a 6 player party would be much better, but I'm guessing it's because of the limitations of the DS that we're stuck with 4.
Atleast we still get unite attacks and party support characters.
I would have preferred the rune system over the standard mp system aswell.
But hey, as long as they can deliver a great story I'm good. ^_^

Agreed. Why the hell they're making this game resemble Suikoden IV, aka the universally agreed upon worst game in the series, is beyond me. Are they also going to get rid of the big war battles? Why not just call it RPG XVI.

I just got so excited and then so pissed faster than a pregnant chick. I guess that's why they're not calling it Suikoden VI b/c this is clearly not a true Suikoden.

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
