Forums - PC - PC gaming is bigger than ever - and likely bigger than Wii+PS3+360 in 2007

Because compared to what consoles sell it is in a distant last place?

All consoles combined, maybe. But it's still bigger than any single console. Add in the hardware revenues, and I'd imagine the PC market would utterly dwarf the console market.

I *really* doubt that.  True, those PC games do keep selling for years but don't assume the good console games do the same thing.

Name me the big sellers for PC this year and I promise you just about any user could tell you a game that doubled that games sales and then add another that matched that games sale for any single platform.

-edit-

Perhaps the double remark is stretching things a little, but outsold by at least a considerable amount.  Also, the only exception to this would probably be WoW but I imagine at the Wii and 360 both have something that can at the very least match it.

At GC in Leipzig, the PC Gaming Alliance releases its "Horizons" report

- PC gaming was a $10.7 billion industry in 2007
- Previous reports show that $8.3 billion comes from non-casual games
- Therefore, casual games is a $2.4 billion market
- Only 30% of sales come from retail
- $2 billion from digital distribution (Steam, D2D, etc.)
- $4.8 billion from online gaming (WoW, other MMOs) - previous evidence shows WoW at $1.1 billion.

“Our analysis clearly shows incredible growth in online PC gaming, proof that this industry is far stronger than anyone has reported,” said Stude. “Today’s consumers shop where they live - online.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A total of $2 billions in Digital Distribution is HUGE. If the average game is sold at $30, then it means that over 65 millions PC games were sold online but not accounted for.

Interesting, and I fully expect very big MMORPGs with monthly charges to start appearing on PS3, since the PS3 affords devs the freedom to charge customers and make the decisions about their game unlike XBL.

What? You do know you can order MMORPGs with a silver account right (This is the free XBL)....

I have a feeling that there are less PC exclusives then there were some time ago.

Yeah, I know with FFXI you only had to pay a single fee to play on the 360 and I'm assuming that's the PlayOnline fee from SE.

From what I've seen, it looks like the US accounts for around 50% of video game sales revenue. In 2007, that amounted to around $8.6 billion, stripping out the PC revenue reported by NPD at 9.5% of retail sales. So let's really over compensate, and say $25 billion worldwide for consoles.

That was mainly split between 4 consoles (including the PS2) and a couple of handhelds. The PC generated $10.7 billion in the same year according to the report. Maybe the Wii accounted for over 40% of the console revenue and took more, but there's no way the PC is in last place.

There are less exclusives all round. It's not really economically viable any more unless you're being given a hefty incentive.

If you're going to try that method, don't take the total and divide by 4, that's just silly.  You give a pretty exact amount for the PC to compare a very general for the other four, one of those not being a huge factor, and that just isn't right.

If you want to try and compare that, find the totals for each indivual console.

guigr- did you get to see any UK sales figures as well? I know Germany's a massive PC market, especially in strategy games, but I just wondered how we Brits compared.

Not much I only saw some totals. From what I saw multiplatform games were selling very poorly compared to console versions and games like Football Manager were selling very well.

You must know that already, sorry.

Why? As I said, the total for all consoles and handhelds looks likely to be around $25 million, therefore there's absolutely no way the PC's in last place. Like I also said, unless the Wii accounts for more than about 40% of that figure, the PC will actually be in first place for revenue. If you can find different figures proving otherwise, then be my guest.
