Forums - Microsoft - Dreamfall: The Longest Journey for Xbox and Xbox Originals

I've wanted to play this game for the longest time. Is it just one of the two games in the series, or is this both games on one disc? Also opinions will be nice. PC gamers can lend their opinions also.

Νο, onyx, it is a sequel. With another Heroine, Zoe Castillo, not April Ryan. And it ends with a cliffhanger. And the scenario may be relevant, but, the games themselves, are sooooo irrelevant. In "Longest Journey" you face one of the most brilliant adventure games out there. Simple as that. Compelling and intriguing story, awesome riddles and well made characters. On the other hand, Dreamfall, (though, I admit, I enjoyed it, is more of an interactive movie. Not much thinking, pretty obvious puzzle solutions, and some lame I must say, action and stealth parts. Not enough though to ruin the overall feeling and atmosphere. And the story is really good too. Really good. Anyway pal, definitely play the first one, and then, yes, play the sequel too. I think it is the only way so that you can enjoy it!

very well put together game, 1st was very good and i liked the sequel as well.

This is the second game in the sequel. The reason I didn't download it is because I hear it has a terrible, cliff-hanger ending, and there will never be closure to the story.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

So basically I need to play the original before I play this?

@Zen-On the wiki page, it says they're making something called Dreamfall Chapters which means something like a Half-Life Episode.

I played about halfway through this game on the PC. The puzzle just were not there, the game didn't really keep my interested. Like said before, it's more of and interactive movie. I enjoyed the game Syberia 1 & 2 a little more then this one, they were a little more interactive.

The Longest Journey however was a great game.

@Zen, the creator said that he will finish the story in any way possible. If he can not get someone to publish a game he will release the game/story in some way for free on the internet.

@Onyx, Both of these games rocked. As Moosebox indicated Dreamfall is much more about story then it is about puzzle, as that goes you need to play the first one and have enjoyed it to get the most out of Dreamfall. I didn't have any expectations for Dreamfall and maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. I didn't like Zoe at first (too pretty girl for me after falling in love with April) but by the end I really liked her.

Dreamfall has more of an impact if the player is familiar with the events of Longest Journey, but it stands quite well on its own despite the overlap.

April from the first game is virtually unrecognizable in Dreamfall, due to the ten years that have passed since the Longest Journey, so it's not like the two games flowed directly together. More like two different story lines of two unrelated characters that eventually merge into one overall plot.

Longest Journey feels like the quintessential mid-90's point and click Sierra adventure game from a game play mechanics standpoint. Very dated, but the story and somewhat clever/convoluted, point and click-y puzzles are really what make the game stand out and worth playing.

Dreamfall attempts to use late-90's style 3D controls, including a fairly crude combat system, but navigation through the game is still much smoother than Longest Journey. Puzzles are simpler with more emphasis of somewhat basic action platforming. Plot and character development again are the key strengths of the game, and the reasons why most people enjoyed it.

I enjoyed Dreamfall immensely enough to play through it again on PC (better visuals are appreciated). I actually spent more time playing this game on the 360 than any of the 360 titles I initially bought with the console (gears, bioshock, Halo 3, tomb raider...). The story was very engaging, and the characters very likable despite their human flaws.

Overall, very different games in execution, but both well worth keeping in a collection.

Best bet is to hunt down a copy of the Game of the Year Edition, which has both Longest Journey and Dreamfall. You should be able to find a used copy for $20, maybe less.

Dreamfall looks much better on a current PC with the higher display resolution. The Xbox 720x480p output looks very clean, but still SD pixelated on an HD display.

Or you can buy both through Steam ($20 or 25 for both).

^I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who loves the Longest Journey series. I got tons of enjoyment out of both games.

The steam deal is totally worth it. The value you get for $25 is immense. If you're shy you can buy just The Longest Journey for $10 to see if you're interested (it's best to play the first one first anyway). I don't see why people wouldn't take that chance for what is one damn amazing adventure game (metacritic: 91, not that reviews mean anything  ).
