Interesting numbers. The Wii's pace for the next few years appears to be able to exceed the DS, and with the DS selling about 3.8m like this, I can imagine the Wii consistently selling a little above.
Microsoft has a good line-up this holiday, covering the "hardcore" base while reaching the casual with Viva Pinata. However, after a month or so (early-February) I think sales would return to what they are now.
Sony needs LBP to do good, but Resistance 2 has the hardcore covered. Motorstorm isn't really a system seller to be, but it does compliment Resistance well.
BTW, what the heck is up with that "Mario machine" quip?
Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. " thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."
I enjoyed reading this article good written and very interesting thx :).

totally agree. wii music be ableto satisfy the casuals and i think either fatal frame, wario land or disaster will satisfy the core nintendo audience. animal crossing will be the big game to appeal to both. however i think we wont see that much of a drop in sales as the other consoles because of conduit and madwolrd Q1 2009 which i think will both be system sellers

Nintendo still has the price cut card to play. The moment their sales begin to drop, they will cut the price.
I did some research on the web and found some estimates that the cost of the Wii when it was launched was about USD 200,00. If we take into account that Sony was able to cut the cost of the PS3 in half (USD 400 down from 800, correct me if I'm wrong), if Nintendo was able to pull the same cut, the Wii would cost only USD 100 to make right now. That would give them a large margin for price reduction.
I think people make a mistake and assume that a game has to be exclusive (and/or first party) in order to be a meaningful game for a platform. Regardless of whether the game is available for other consoles, there are many people who would buy a Wii to play games like Starwars: The Force Unleashed; possibly because the gameplay might be better, because they think the Wii is a more interesting product, because the Wii is much more affordable, or because it is just the cool product to own.
On top of this there are several exclusive third party titles which go unnoticed but have potential to be excellent games, and sell well if they're marketed well. Certainly, I wouldn't make a long list of titles and bet that they would all be million sellers but I do think that there are quite a few titles that could be break-out successes and outperform a lot of (over)hyped titles for the HD consoles.
The last thing I can say is the title being released this holiday season which has the best selling previous version is Animal Crossing so I wouldn't ignore it as being a major release.
PS2 is over 1.4m in the USA in 2008 if you include figures for January NPD (readily available on gamedaily)
Roughly speaking you can just multiply total July sales * 2.5 to get an idea of what sales for the year will look like. Multiplying June year to date totals by three works fairly well too generally.
PS3/360 should end up near 5m in the USA this year by NPD. Thats pretty good.
The issue for them is Wii is on pace for 10.5m in the USA by NPD in the USA (3.5m through June YTD, 4m through July). If we really start seeing a few 1m Wiis/month months in the USA in August to October as is theoretically possible, 13m or 14m is more realistic.
