Stop watching after he called the multimedia hubs (PS360) "toys"
I didn't know that a movie player was a "toy" I didn't know that a storage unit for pictures and videos was a "toy" I didn't know that a continuing thrust towards an online community was a "toy"
You can have fun, enjoy, and be entertained by things without out them being "toys"
I enjoy paintballing. Is my paintball gun a "toy"? I like building things. Are my tools "toys"? I like playing online with friends. In what aspect does that make my system a "toy".
I understood what he was trying to say, but he was being too oversimplistic by generalizing anything that is enjoyable as a "toy". But then again, I guess simplicity is what Nintendo is going after nowadays. He swears that M$ and Sony's game divisions are going to die off because they focus on HD....well guess what. IT'S BECOMING THE STANDARD!!!! Why would M$ and Sony want to effectively work BACKWARDS? Everyone is slowly but surely buying HDTV's, 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound systems, HD receivers, etc.....
It's actually SMARTER to work on COMPLIMENTING what people are already doing. It's like economics. Say peanut butter sales were starting to go up. That would consequentally make jelly sales go up too. (PB is HD, and Sony/M$ are the jelly)
The Nintendo approach to this would be that if peanut butter sales were going up, they would push something completely opposite, like I dunno....vinegar.
Sorry if that seems like a generalization or is too simplistic, but hey, that's what Nintendo is doing, right?
Edit: I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoy the fact that Sony has grown with me. I can't say M$ because they're new......but for Sony, the PS brand has grown up with me. THe started with the likes of Spyro and Crash Bandicoot when I was a kid. Getting older, they got things like DMC and the Jak series. Now this generation I'm seeing the likes of Uncharted and MGS4. He mentions "diehards", but the fact is, M$ and Sony are actually keeping their audiences, whereas Nintendo continually brings in new ones by sticking with Mario, and thus abandons the older ones because they get tired of rehashes every generation.
My two cents..... |
I see where you're going with this however I'd more equate Nintendo with selling BREAD. Buying peanutbutter you might not buy jelly and buying jelly you might want toast so you'll need bread but not always peanutbutter or jelly. Regardless of the way you go Bread would sell. Perhaps you don't even like Peanutbutter because it's not sweet enough and want Nutella!
In this analogy HDTVs = Peanutbutter PS3/360 = Jelly(let's assume raspberry and grape) Wii = Bread. SDTV = Nutella
Let me elaborate for you. If you buy an HDTV you can still fully enjoy the Wii, if you own an SDTV you can still fully enjoy the PS3 however when it's main selling point seems to be it's HD format you might be less inclined Wii's main selling point is it's controller not it's resolution output. If you buy a 360 you can still enjoy a Wii if you buy a PS3 you can still enjoy a Wii but it's more difficult to enjoy a PS3 and a 360 as there's a lot of overlap, hence why I throw them as Jelly. Regardless of which you want you might not want to serve it with peanutbutter(HDTV), you may choose too use Nutella, but you will more likely enjoy some bread with that.
Disclaimer: I know not everybody will buy a Wii I was just using the analogy given to me and running with it.
Edit: I realize a lot of people might not know what nutella is. Nutella is a Hazelnut and cocoa spread not unlike peanut butter.
