Forums - Microsoft - Would Microsoft have crushed Sony if the Xbox 360 had had HD DVD built in?

Not trying to troll or anything, but wouldn't the 360 with HD-DVD still have the same RROD failure rate that plagued the console in the first year? I'm pretty sure that that would have put off way more ppl into buying a $600 console that has a chance of catching RROD. That would have resulted in much less sales (mainly cuz of price tag), would have given HD-DVD a bad name because of the 360's "false start" and I think it would have forced MS to have waited another year to release (I know, hypothetical situation, I just think that MS would have waited for parts to be cheaper before launching a 360 with an HD-DVD built in)

Good point. I wouldn't spend $600 on a RRoD prone console. Then add onto that $60 for online. A $660 console thats gonna likely break.

If Toshiba knew that by forcing HD player down gamers' throat would win a format war, I'm sure they would have accepted the loss and release a HD DVD drive in every 360, all without increasing much the cost of purchase at launch. That would have garanteed HD DVD's survival and probably bluray would be dead on arrival.

They prob could have but they didnt have the brains or the innovation or the B***S to do it.

They must have thought it was 'too risky'.......you know, with the almost 2 year headstart with no next gen competitor in the market. I would be shaking in my overly priced suits if I was Mr. Gates, wouldn't you????

Get a grip, MS are on the way down, Google and Sony are mashing the American Giant.

This is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Microsoft not knowing how to deal with a format? LMAO!!!! They could've cared less. When they realized HD-DVD was dying because the PS3 came out, then they decided to come out with a HD-DVD player connector, which didn't sell because it didnt come inside the 360, and no one saw the need for it as they bought the 360 for the games, by the time the PS3 came out. MS isn't on the way down...they are holding Sony beneath them for as long as they can, as you can clearly see. Be blind if you wish.

The way I see it, the majority of people werent and STILL aren't ready for Blu Ray or HD-DVD. They were both meant to die until a better economic time comes around the corner. The only TRUE people praising Blu Ray are tech nerds. I know...because I'm friends with a couple people in the movie industry with computer design and thats all they brag about with the PS3.

I don't think they would crush them, it would cost more to make it built in and would drive down sales.

People forget that the internal HD-DVD would have made the 360 more expensive make it even more difficult for it to compete with the PS3. The XBOX 360 apears to have less value for money than the PS3 since consumers often react better to PS3 price cuts than they do 360 price cuts , a high XBOX 360 price point ( caused by internal HD-DVD ) would have been the death of the 360.

The PS3 price cuts came with MGS4 trailing behind it. The Xbox 360's price drop in September will turn heads, so be weary.

The reason why Microsoft is ahead of Sony is because they DON'T have a built-in HDDVD. Price is more of an important factor.

And the games as well as the active installed base. Don't forget that either. :)

==> you are right for price but false for the "active user base" Outside NA, the userbase is dying ... that is why MS is not able to maintain their lead in EU (including UK soon)

ROFL, MGS4 lol MGS4 was delayed (as a lot of title) and despite this, many people still bought their PS3 Also, do you want to know what was REALLY trailing behind the PS3 price cut ??? ===> GTA4 exclusive add-on only for Xbox360 ....................

Let North America do the dirty work and let europe just sustain itself with the HD systems. We're more prone to buying this kind of stuff in larger amounts anyway. Japan is lagging and both systems sold over 5 Mil in europe. Let it be. Wait for the price drop. The user base isn't dying. Actually quite recently Microsoft nearly tied Sony in Europe, so what you're saying is quite a stretch.

The 360 is up year over year isn't it?
