The 60 GB is out in retail and online, but it's $350. The 20 GB models were dropped to $299 while they were still in stock. It was a faux price cut, much like the one PS3 had last year.
In September, the 60 GB is reportedly going down to $299 as a permanent price cut. Right now, $299 is considered somewhat of a sweet spot for the HD consoles, and Sony can't afford to charge that yet because their console is not yet profitable for them. Unfortunately for MS, their price cuts always seem to get leaked ahead of time. This really effects sales, but then when the price cuts actually happen, you get a huge boom in hardware sales because of all the people who waited for the cut. Also, the only big exclusive for 360 this summer was Ninja Gaiden 2. Certainly a worthy game, but nothing that's going to push hardware. (By the way, I absolutely LOVED that game.)
Sony has stated more than once that they have to focus on profitability and therefore will NOT be doing a price cut on the PS3 this year. And for once, I actually believe them. Why? Because of recent comments about "investing in potential" when you buy the PS3 and somewhat recent stories that the PS3 has already lost billions of dollars for Sony and is still not turning a profit. They're also continually reiterating the fact that it's the best BluRay option on the market, and so far, they're right about that.
I honestly don't care what happens in this "war". I have a 360 and a long list of games I want to play that haven't been released yet. I think the 360 will be fine no matter what place it ends up being in at the end. But I also think that the PS3 could be in real danger of finishing third, which would be HUGE for Microsoft regarding the next gen.

Considering we are talking in light of US sales and NPD here: NPD Record Dec 2007 Xbox 360: 1.26 million http://www.gamespot.com/news/6184847.html NPD Record Nov 2007 Xbox 360: 770,000 PlayStation 3: 466,000 http://www.thesimexchange.com/blogpost.php?post_id=455 Xbox 360 2,030,000 PS3 1,262,000 =~800K+ 360 Good times indeed. PS3 doesn't even have a chance this fall if it remains at the same price point while MS does serious undercutting. Last year will look like a joke. Considering MS now has a full year of fiscal profit behind them unlike Sony I see no reason to keep the pressure on. In the last 12 months in the US the 360 has only gained share not lost and yes you do have to factor the key holday season.

That's nice, but it doesn't matter if Microsoft outsells in America this year if it is getting owned worldwide. Thanks to the American dollar, Europe has the most potential for profit.
Microsoft can't cut the prices any lower in Europe and Japan is basically a non-factor for them. A price cut would help, but it won't be enough to push them past worldwide.
By the way, 360 used to dominate NPD every month over PS3, after the last holiday season that all changed. Don't expect things to go back the way they were so fast.
360's price cuts sort of screwed it. With all the rumors of a true price cut for 60GB, people are definitely waiting for September or waiting for a similar Forza holiday bundle. Consumers that purchase a HD console now are more price conscious (those who aren't price conscious already owns a 360) and thus would wait for the best deal before dropping the dollar. The arcade 360 needs to go 200$ and push extreme 360 sales. That with release of lips, you're in the movies, banjo and viva pinata should bring some casual gamers.
They should also do a lot of commercials that cheat customers that they are paying for potentials. People are sucked to the PS3 because of potentials. MS is too honest about their console, they must bluff and say that their console is only 10% of what it can, just like what Sony does. They should release cgi of Gears of War 2 and say that it's in game. and other stuffs like this would make people drool over your console and fork 400$ for it. In the end, it doesn't matter that you don't fulfill promises, you have your fanboys to defend you.
MS can do what many have already accepted as fact will happen in September: permanent price drops across their entire product line.
Unfortunately, this will only effect NA sales.
Fortunately, NA happens to be the 360's strongest market.
If this simple strategy doesn't work, then it would imply consumer interest in the platform is plateauing after three years on the market, and there is no catalyst that will result in mass consumer adoption of the platform on par with the Wii.

He could have something with that ^^ LOL
but yeah, I think the price drop will definatly move units. More ads probably would get new blood to the system. I think they are obviously set with their core crowd, who are regulars with XBOX Live and hearing news there, but to average Joe out there probably doesn't realize what all this console can do.
