I don't think Killzone is generic. I don't think the article was fair to COD4 features. Perks are a great feature that should be detailed on any list. I agree that Killzone 2 will be treated unfairly in the press and by fanboys.

I am playing Killzone Liberation on my PSP. It is a lot of fun. It is the hardest shooter I've played in a while. The AI is very good. The dialog sucks, but the game is good.

It would seem that dialog is what Guerilla Games needs to focus on most. The gameplay videos of Killzone 2 show some iffy dialog.

Agreed. They need to get out of the macho man speak.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I agree with that. I recall Rico not sounding so macho in the e3 2007 appearance, now it's like he turns it up quite a bit.

It was also really annoying in one gameplay video where Garza kept saying things like "lets go" even though the player was right behind him, he shouldn't have to remind you every three seconds to follow him. Also, Garza's dialog kept changing tones. There'd be a good line, then suddenly a line that has a completely different tone.

I do think it's generic, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Every year it gets harder and harder to add something new and innovative to a game because almost everything has already been done. As long as a game takes what has already been done and makes it fun again it's still worth playing (CoD 4). People shouldn't be expecting new revolutionary gameplay mechanics in every single new game that comes out.

Generic? that word is thrown around too much these days

I suppose, too bad that many of the responses here are too generic....

lol, You got me there .

FPS games aren't about features, they are about experience and adrenaline.

The Call of Duty series, with its detailed script-driven action (which makes the AI appear much more intelligent than it actually is), has always provided the kind of thrill FPS gamers are looking for... hence its high regard.

Most other shooters stay away from the super-constrained linear gameplay of CoD, and let their AI attempt to provide an exciting experience onces its spawned into the world, via a much simpler scripting mechanism. This isn't to say that most shooters aren't totally linear, from a high-level standpoint, but rather that the CoD designers are really clever about setting up situations where you can watch a scripted AI, or group of AIs, friendly or enemy, do something exciting, whereas other games tend to let their AI run on a longer leash, and it kind of reduces the game to a somewhat less-than-cinematic experience. The Half-Life series is successful, and highly regarded, for the same reasons. It has nothing to do with technical prowess, although that's certainly what people like to talk about.

That being said, the original KZ was better than most shooters at providing good situational encounters. I have no doubt that it'll be good, in that regard -- destructable environs, etc... are totally meaningless in the end.

"Generic" in FPS terms, means the encounters aren't exciting... that they are bland, usually due to repetition, lack of scripting, bad game balancing, or just plain bad AI. Quake 4... generic. DOOM 3... generic. Haze... generic. Jericho, The Darkness, etc. (all those shooters one the HD consoles you can easily forget about).. generic. Halo series... generic (great multiplayer though).

HL2... good. CoD series... good. KZ... good. Gears... okay. R6V1,2... okay. GRAW1,2 good, etc., etc. I think KZ2 will be decent.

Yes it is.
