Forums - Gaming - I Hate To Say It, but the PS3 Might Not Get a Price Cut (My Opinion Inside)

well,

1/Sony dont care if classic BlueRay player don't sell a lot since, I presume, most of the BlueRay player are not made by sony.
Sony just want to increase PS3 sales which is their most important blueray player.

2/ Console have cost maybe 800$ but now I m pretty sure she costs less than 700$. Of course this doesn't mean that a price cut is easy to do since 700$ still> 600$

Time to Work !

I don't know if I buy the $800 price point to manufacture anymore. Prices do drop, and some of them very rapidly.

And as far as releases next year... Those are the only two that you may have heard of...

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

Hard to say how much it cost to produce PS3 now. I think peoepls over estimates cost efficiency in such a short period of time.

End of 2007 Predictions:

Wii =18m

360=14m

PS3=7m

DS=64m

PSP=30m

Nintendo has shown that the typical "sell the console at a loss" is not the way to make the most money.  As such, I think its time that Sony change their tune and not drop the price.  They will never catch the Wii in sales.  They will always be at least $200 more and people are cheap.  They will struggle to catch the 360 in sales because the 360 is essentially the PS2 now.  They have more games, better online and PS3 will always cost at least as much as the 360.  As such, the PS3 should focus on making money on their console.  Will they lose exclusives, yes.  Will they get 360 ports, yes.  However, they'll still get some amazing exclusives (FF, MG), they have an internal development team that is bigger than Nintendos to keep an even supply of games coming.  I think they need to realize that they are the GameCube this generation.  But that's not a bad thing the GameCube made a ton of money.  They just need to not panic and drop their price like mad.  Not only will that cause billions in losses, but it will also hurt brand recognition and customer confidence.  Not withstanding the fact that its going to be a band aid on their problems (lost exclusives, development shift to wii/360).

Blu-Ray players are now available cheaper than a PS3 so no one will get one just to play movies. I can't see that Sony thought they would sell many for this purpose anyway.

I think a price drop is unlikely this year for several reasons.

They don't want to look like their entire strategy based on selling the most advanced, expensive console is a mistake. I think they'll coincide the price drop, when it does come, with the release of a major title, or at least in a timeframe when the big titles are being released as they need to ensure they move enough copies of these games so that they can keep them on the PS. That way it looks more like a marketing strategy giving people more of an excuse to buy the console and the games they want. If they just cut the price then the media will be full of articles about how Sony are admitting they made a mistake and they really don't need more bad press for the PS3.

Also a premature price cut of say $100 will cost big. If it helps them shift 3m consoles, that is an extra loss of $300m on top of their current losses on each console. How many more games do they have to sell to make that up?

They would be far better off investing heavily on titles and applications that will make people want a PS3. That is what it's really lacking right now! Every one knows there will be price cuts in the future so they expect them, but Sony need to give people a reason to want the PS3 over the other consoles.

Sony set the price at $600 because cost reductions would soon ensure that they were breaking even and they'd turn a profit before their initial price reduction (18 months later if it follows the standard Playstation pattern). Lowering the price in Q3 (to $400) would mean that Sony is reducing the price of their console at least 6 to 9 months earlier than they anticipated and would be returning to taking large losses on the production of the console.

No matter what Sony does at this point in time it will be a gamble; a price reduction will represent a large quantity of money on reasonable odds, and not producing a price reduction represents a tiny ammount of money on longer odds. Even a price reduction of $200 to $300 does not ensure success of the platform and 12 months after they produce the price reduction they could be forced to make this decision again.

Cleveland - Sony has more internal devs than Nintendo? I find that hard to believe, but it's not the first time I heard that... Anyone have a source on the matter?

There will be a price cut, also if there is one why would developers suddenly abandon the PS3, they are the ones saying it needs a price cut see SEGA and UBsoft

Last I checked they have more internal developers and produce more games but they sell far less copies of their games and do not have the reputation that Nintendo does.

I don't believe the $800 price to make anyway. And even if it was true, I'm pretty sure it will be significantly less than that now. And once they get the bluray players down as well...they are starting to fall now...they should be able to reduce costs even further.

Sony WILL have a pricecut and at the latest, it will happen by the summer of next year although I reckon it will happen in November this year.
