Blu-Ray players are now available cheaper than a PS3 so no one will get one just to play movies. I can't see that Sony thought they would sell many for this purpose anyway.

I think a price drop is unlikely this year for several reasons.

They don't want to look like their entire strategy based on selling the most advanced, expensive console is a mistake. I think they'll coincide the price drop, when it does come, with the release of a major title, or at least in a timeframe when the big titles are being released as they need to ensure they move enough copies of these games so that they can keep them on the PS. That way it looks more like a marketing strategy giving people more of an excuse to buy the console and the games they want. If they just cut the price then the media will be full of articles about how Sony are admitting they made a mistake and they really don't need more bad press for the PS3.

Also a premature price cut of say $100 will cost big. If it helps them shift 3m consoles, that is an extra loss of $300m on top of their current losses on each console. How many more games do they have to sell to make that up?

They would be far better off investing heavily on titles and applications that will make people want a PS3. That is what it's really lacking right now! Every one knows there will be price cuts in the future so they expect them, but Sony need to give people a reason to want the PS3 over the other consoles.
