How long would it take the PS3 to catch the 360 at that rate?

Im not being ignorant.. Also assuming they estimate wont get you anywhere, there is a reason why console makers use NPD and not other sources.

I don't have to assume, just look into how NPD actually works. They make estimates on all sorts of household electronics, and various other consumer goods, just like all the other tracking firms around the world do. Just look at famitsu/media create for examples of how trackers estimate. Both services track video game sales, yet they differ all the time. This week is a prime example of the differences just in software alone.

It could do that, or the NPD Group could do the same. It is as likely that the NPD Group is as incorrect as you say VGChartz is. Personally, I am more inclined to believe VGChartz's numbers. |
I can't believe the damage control. People are questioning the NPD?!

It is probably mix of the two being off a bit, but I seriously believe NPD is off this month. August should give a bit more bearing as we head into Sept.

At the same rate, without price drops, compelling software, increased value and brand name, oh, a couple of years.
But since all of those things apply to the real world, who knows. Depends.
Since the 360 launched, I always wondered whether MS would be able to expand their market beyond the original Xbox's. This entire year has seemed to show that the system is struggling at best to reach a greater fanbase.
My Top 5:
Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger
My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3
and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

One price drop, one year, and a sackboy.

Totally off? Nah... but it was better that VGC numbers were like 20% off then saying X360>PS3 while in fact PS3>X360 that damges VGC a lot more.

Actually since NPD covers more data, its statistically more probable that NPD is correct.
As in go buy us some coffee.

To be fair it is an easy mistake to make though and everyone makes mistakes it is part of being human. The thing which ruffles my feathers is that before these figures people were questioning if the allegations ioi was making about various things were true or not. Rather then talk about it he just did a "im right and if you disagree your banned" approach. As far as i'm concerned i love this website and appreciate the work the people put in to it but that doesn't mean your immune to being asked questions etc.. If everyone acted like that in the real world could you imagine it?
