Forums - Website Topics - Why I started blocking ads

I enjoy the forums on this site and I still intend to be a poster here for a long time, but I have had to do something that I do not like to do on any site I visit.  I have started blocking certain ads on this site.  First I targeted the "Congrats, you have won a Wii/Laptop/iPod" ads.  After constantly having to mute my speakers, I had had enough.  Today I blocked an ad on this forum that tried to open 6 popup windows (thank you Firefox for blocking them).

Now, please take this criticism in the spirit in which it is intended.  I like the site alot, but the ads that are running on this site are not appropriate and are far below what this site should be showing.

VGChartz' current Alexa rating is 7,567.  For those that don't know, this is a pretty decent rating.  The ads that are running on this site are Busch league.  I did a comparison with another site I visit, HardOCP.com which has a much lower ranking, around 16,000.  That site, a computer hardware site, runs ads for companies that are related to the focus of the site, are professional in appearance, and come from top companies in that field.

I believe the ads on this site make the site look less professional, do not maximize the earning potential of the site, and now, with the ad that just tried to open 6 windows, even opening up the users to popup attacks.

Good advertisements can be a benefit to a website.  Having advertisements for companies in the industry shows that the website has prestige and recieves high traffic.  Whoever is handling the ads for the site, please take this into consideration.

Thanks

im sick and tired of winning free apple ipods

There are also problems with cross site scripting for some of the ads on this site. They definitely need to be cleaned up.

This wont end well....

you have a point there, it would be better if the ads were more related too the site...

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

No one has rated this thread yet?! 9.2/11.

What I hate is the ads with sound. EDIT: Oh and the hit the apple off Bush's head is too easy. (I only play because Firefox blocks the pop-up anyways.)

Yeh, if we had ads for games it would be better

The Ipods aren't the problem. It's the cross scripting adds that download virus' on your computer.

^yeah some of the ads (gay friendly travel) probable don't seem to mix with the site and do what i am planning, i am going to ebay all of the ipods i have won..right now my count is 1,234,782,98

I agree that some ads on the site look like they'd fit better on a geocities page (like those Bush IQ tests, congratulations you've won "x" enter your name). They make the site look less professional than it is and that's a shame.

To me the worst offenders are the ads with sound because I'm almost always listening to music when I visit the site and those ads are seriously annoying mixed in with my favorite tunes.
