How odd... it's as if Wikipedia is a useless source for reliable information.
SONY the company, last fiscal report (quarter ending June 30th) had the PS2 at just under 132 million SHIPPED.
Now am not certain, but I believe that 132 million also includes a good number of consoles that were sent out as replacements for early models... I have no information about the failure rate of early models but at a guess at least 5 million will have been directly replaced by Sony..... that brings the SHIPPED TO RETAIL down to 127million.
I don't have much doubt that the PS2 is undertracked here on VGC, the PS2 has been released in many regions that no one, anywhere, has any sales data for.... but believe me... the PS2 is no where near 140 million sold... that was a mistake (or perhaps even a lie) by whichever Sony employee stated it.

no they've definetly passed the 140 Million mark. here are the sources:

ALL INCORRECT
the confusion Sony causes with the Bullshit that comes out of their mouths almost causes me pain.... I have had to repeat this so many fucking times. (I am not aiming this outrage at you directly, it is not your fault I have to repeat this it is Sonys)
All three of those sources you stated took their information from the same interview/quote from the same Sony empolyee.... what thet employee said was incorrect.
Go here: http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_e.html
The very bottom right number is how many PS2s were "shipped" (this was Sony's old method, so it includes consoles that were sent as replacements and not sold to retailers... what we here on VGC refer to as shipped, is what Sony calls "sold", which means sold to retailers.).
That number is 117.89 million which is up to March 2007.
To find the numbers for sold to retail go here: http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_sale_e.html
On that page you can see the number of PS2s sold to retail fo the last 2 1/4 years, ignore the 2006 data because the other number already includes that. The 13.73 is what was sold to retail in the year ending March 31st 2008. then the 1.51 is what was sold to retail in the last quarter.
Add all three numbers together and you get 133.13 (I was wrong about it being just under 132)
but like I said.... that 117.89 million figure includes all PS2s produced from launch to March 2007.... and because the early model PS2s were so unreliable, I think a minimum of 5 million of that number will be replacements, possibly near 10 million.... it's basically as if Microsoft added any replacement RROD machines onto their figures (they don't btw).
