Forums - Gaming - Question for SaGa Frontier lovers such as myself.

I absolutely loved SaGa Frontier, one of the greatest games I have ever played, too many reasons to explain why but what I loved most was the battle system, no RPG tops it for me, nothing even comes close.

Anyways I am in a bit of a gaming drought, I tried playing all the way through Persona 3, stopped 3/4 of the way through "The Journey". I tried to play Digital Devil Saga and just can't bring myself to play RPG's like this right now. I just completed Lunar 2, but now I need some more battle system goodness.

Any of you SaGa Frontier fans out there (if I happen to not be the only one) played Romancing SaGa on PS2? I heard some really good things about it and know that the battle system, extremely non-linear gameplay, mid-battle ability learning, insane battle combos with up to 5 party members and the LP system still exist in this game just as it did with SaGa Frontier. *Drools*

Should I go pick this up from Gamestop right now for $12.99?

I am strapped for cash but I need a gaming fix so personal opinions on the game from fans of SaGa Frontier can help me accept the fact that I won't be going to my girlfriends house this week to save myself that $12.99 worth of gas.

What is SaGa Frontier?

Only the greatest RPG ever created.

About the game:

"

SAGA FRONTIER breaks the mold of traditional role-playing games. Thanks to the Free Scenario System, the player has the opportunity to complete seven different quests, each with a unique lead character and story. However, all of the stories take place in the same world, and most of the stories intersect at various points. This particular arrangement allows the player unprecedented freedom. In addition, the battle system also takes a different approach: rather than conserving hit points (they regenerate between fights), players must conserve weapon points, which are used to unleash powerful attacks. Multiple attacks can be combined to create even more devastating combinations. Try to discover the links between all of the characters and the greater evil guiding all of the events in SAGA FRONTIER."

What makes it so fun though is the battle system, it just never gets dull. So many things you can do.

It was for PS1.

Here is a video with one of my favorite battle themes.

Go buy it.. Saga Frontier is Romancing Saga 4.. so if you like that game you probably like Romancing Saga for the PS2 which is a remake of the original NES version... just don't buy unlimited Saga.. that one is terrible..

note: IMO Saga Frontier and Romancing Saga are average.. not the greatest RPG's ever.. but fun for those hours..

I purchased Unlimited SaGa day one back in the day... big mistake.

Romancing SaGa is a remake of the game from the SNES I believe, the original SaGa game was Final Fantasy Legends for the gameboy.

The reason why I always felt it was the best I ever played was because it gives me freedom unlike any other RPG I have played, dating up to now. Yeah it may seem weak in the story department but in terms of gameplay, it is unrivaled IMO. I also love the fact I am allowed to save anytime, anywhere.

I guess the gas is not going to be saved anyways, I need to drive 8 miles to pick it up.

There are many flaws with this series that I don't see why this series was so popular in Japan. I never played any of the game in the series but I heard that the series is an example of how to NOT do nonlinear RPGs.

Two words can answer that.

Battle System.

The reason why they bash on the nonlinearity of the game is because it is quite easy for players to not know exactly where to go next and can wind up going somewhere where monsters completely wipe the floor with them. Although this does not matter since travel is extremely fast and easy as well as the fact that it does not matter in which order you complete each of the quests. Each time you play you can do things in whichever order you wish with whatever 15+ characters are usually available to you. Plus you can save anywhere so it makes a gameover not so bad.

If you have Gamefly, it is worth trying out though, just for the battle system. It is hard to become bored with a battle system where each party member has over 100 possible skills to learn whether it be Gun, Sword, Magic (7-10 different types each containing 5-7 spells), Dodge. Then you have Mechs who have their own abilities to learn which is done through absorbing intelligence from mech enemies you defeat. Then you even have monsters you can have in your party who can change their form based on what skills you allow them to learn. They learn abilities just like a mech.

I found SaGa Frontier both very fun and very boring : with only human characters in your party it's great fun with all the abilities and combinaisons but all other types of characters are incredibly boring to play with.

Signature goes here!

My bad.. I was wrong about the NES it was the SNES.. but if you really don't mind the bad storyline and you really like Saga Frontier go buy Romancing Saga..
