Forums - Sales - Japan is not gonna forget about the PS3, make no mistake.

Sony will drop price once the redesign is out. The internal parts are still expensive.  However as each day passes, parts become cheaper.  The new 80gb SKU will have 65nm Cell and RSX, and Toshiba and NVIDIA are already finalizing a 45nm chip that will supposedly debut as well.  The 45 nm chip + smaller fans + external small power brick = super slim PStriple.

1. The PSP never sold as bad as the PS3.
2. The PSP is actually cheap...unlike the PS3. The PS3 won't be as cheap as the PSP.
3. The PS3 doesn't have MH. And even if it did it wouldn't sell as well as MHF for obvious reasons.
4. The PS3 doesn't have a slim/better redesign.
5. A big game like MGS4 only cauaed a substantial boost for PS3 HW. Games like Soul Calibur IV haven't done squat.
6. Handhelds > Consoles in Japan.
7. Japan is more casual than hardcore.
8. Low Japan sales = lower quantity of Japanese games = lower sales. Plus RPGs on the PS3 haven't sold that well.
9. Why should Japanese devs make a big/expensive PS3 game when they can make a MUCH cheaper handheld game or even a Wii game which has 3x the userbase in Japan of the PS3 and 360 combined?
10. The next BIG release is FF XIII...SOMETIME next year. What big Japanese game will come after that for the PS3 that will increase PS3 HW well enough for a while?

*scratches head* Well, we've had Folklore and Enchanted Arms. Those are the only two JRPGs the PS3 has recieved.

Yes, Folklore and EA both did do very well, but Folklore fell victim to same problem of Zack and Wiki and NMH.

Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles are both SRPG and have actually done very well. There are many (that don't have FF in the title) SRPG that sell on consoles. Valkyria  is the second selling console SRPG in Japan. It still has a chance to pass number one this holiday season (need 30k more sales). Disgaea 3 sold on par with Disgaea 1 but a bit below 2.

Folklore did get TV advertising. I guess people just didn't want it for whatever reason.

As for D3 where did you get numbers for the first Disgaea? I mean for an RPG like Disgaea 111k in Japan is good I guess...but it's not amazing enough to justify putting bigger RPGs on it. Sure, a big RPG on the hasn't been seen on the PS3, but 111k isn't...amazing. Same with VC that has 140k sales. Fine, not amazing.

I think you get my point. That reason also ties in with reason 9 I'd say. I mean there's more upcoming RPGs on the Wii than the PS3 for obvious reasons.

Sony has been very quiet on the RPG front.  There are three big RPGs already in development and are exclusive.  (Four if you count only Japan).  Final Fantasy XIII (Japan only), Final Fantasy VS XIII (Japan Only), White Knight Story, and a Tales Exclusive RPG.

Rpgs on Wii:

Tales of Symphonia 2........?

I'm also willing to bet other Japanese exclusive RPGs are in the works and are just quiet.

The Playstation 3 will never have some sort of renaissance in Japan.

1) Brand. The Japanese don't care anymore. They aren't buying the Playstation 3 because of the name, anymore than they bought the N64 during it's fall from grace. Japanese love to switch to the side they feel has the most compelling features.

2) Functionality. The PSP has quite a bit of extra functionality over the DS, which is what has caused the increase in sales. The DS has saturated that market quite well, and the PSP is the only other similar device in a nation that is going portable.

3) Competition. Unlike the PSP, the Playstation 3 has very formidable rivals. The Xbox 360 has the price + Otaku advantage, and the Wii has the casual advantage. With only XIII as their ace in the hole, do you really think that's going to give them some sort of insane advantage?

The PS3 will never reach any sort of PSP-style sales in Japan, ever. It can do better than it is now, at the pitiful 10k/wk that it's selling, and could even double yearly sales at some point. But it stands little chance of reaching 10,000,000 units sold in Japan over the next 3 years...Not good numbers considering their last console sold over 20,000,000 units, and is looking at beating the PS2 on a week-over-week level soon.

you bring up 10 million, i don't think it's even gonna get close to that.  Despite the big MGS bump it's still has sold barely more than the GC at this point.

FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL on so many of you.

NONE OF YOU GUYS HAVE LIVED IN JAPAN. I have lived there for 6 months from a school trip. I'll tell you this much, any store in Akhiabara that you walk into, you'll hear people echo "the Power of PS3".

The Japanese consumers know about the power of PS3, but the general mainstream consensus, on both Japanese forums, and critical reviews- is the machine's size and price. Once it gets streamlined, and the price drops, it will have a boom in Japan.

The Japanese do not hate Playstation. If anything they hate the 360 with a passion. Enough to buy titles and trade them in as soon as they are done.

Arc Rise Fantasia

Fragile

Next Tales Main Series after hearts

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles The Crystal Bearers

Rune Factory Fronteir

MOnster Hutner 3(Not really an Rpg but some say it is, and it is a very important series in japan)

Oboro Muramasa Youtoden(Basically a sequel to Odin SPhere)

Moon Peak(Not much information other than its an Action RPg)

Legend of the River King(Same as above except for the action RPG part)

Camelot(Developers of Golden Sun) RPg

Matsuno(FFT, Ogre Battle, and FFXII developer) RPG.

Those are announced games btw. There will probably be more announced at TGS just because the Wii has sold more than the PS3+360 in Japan, and then some. There is no doubt the WIi will get alot if not most of the Japanese support.

Also what Tales of Rpg are you talking about? There isn't a Tales game for the PS3, and probbly won't be for a long time.

You make it sound like this practice is exlusive to 360 titles. Japanese used game market is HUGE. A lot of people buy the game, play it and then sell it back when they are done, for all systems. Since the used games in Japan are generally in almost brand new condition (unlike US used games), most people there are not afraid to buy used games either.

6 months in Japan you must be some kind of Japan genius.  I lived there for a year and went back a couple times, studied japanese for over 5 years, had a few japanese girlfriends even when i haven't lived there.  It doesn't mean a thing though, most people in America don't even understand the American market and they have lived there all their lives.  All the experts predicted PS3 to win in every market, and they should know much more than anyone who spent any amount of time anywhere.

OH MY GOD, YOU WERE IN JAPAN FOR SIX MONTHS!!!!!111. That makes like the most ultimate authority on Japan ever. Let's ignore the fact that PS3 has not been selling well for the past two years even though it is cheapest in Japan and also that Japanese tend to adopt new technology first. Let us also ignore the fact that Wii and DS have been selling like hotcakes, let us ignore the fact that PS3 has virtually no games that appeal to Japanese. And we can safely ignore all of that because you have spent 6 months in Japan. That's like 2/3 of making a baby.

I never said the PS3 wasn't doing optimally in Japan nor did I exclaim to be some sort of ultimate authority.  I was referencing that these alarmist comments about PS3 being dead in Japan are stupid.  The PS3 will do fine in Japan once the criteria are met that I outlined.  Smaller profile / Final Fantasy XIII / White Knight Story / Little Big Planet.

The Wii is a run away success in all territories. That is not debatable.
