Forums - General - Question for non-religious parents

I'll give my kids a history lesson on every holiday, and show them Wikipedia. And every day tell them how many holidays it is all over the world. Today is Independence Day in Chad, and the day we celebrate the Roman Catholic feast of Saint Attracta, who defeated a dragon that was killing farmers' livestock, and she had healing powers. It's also the birthday of BOB 1 from DEVO, Steve Wozniak, Jerry Falwell, and my wife. Today is also the anniversary of the 2003 heatwave that killed 144 people in Paris, and the anniversary of the last U.S. ground combat troops leaving Vietnam. And Babe Ruth hit his 500th home run today (in Cleveland in 1929), and the Weimar Republic adopted their Constitution!

There's a million reasons to celebrate every day without bringing the Jesus into it. One religious one we might keep is Pancake Day. Actually, we might celebrate some weirder religious holidays nobody's ever heard of just for fun. I don't know yet.

^ agreed with the Noddy thing.

When I have kids I am going to be straight with them from day one. I will just tell them Jesus may not have existed and that god does not exist.

However, if I end up with my current girlfriend things may not turn out like that because I'm guessing they will be half Jewish.

 Will you have themhalf circumcised??

Personally I don't agree with telling kids straight up god doesn't exist. If I have kids in the future I plan on doing what my parents did for me and to give them each a bible and let them figure shit out for themselves.
It's easier to be self assured when you made that major decision for yourself rather than having it made for you.

I intend to tell my kid/s (when that happens), that Christmas and Easter are holidays that different people celebrate for different reasons and I'll explain to them what those reasons are. I'll tell them that I celebrate them largely because I would never turn down a reason to celebrate, and that my focus for the holiday is the love of my friends and family.

I also intend to really downplay the consumerist aspects of Christmas as I wish to spare them some of the nerve wracking holiday ruining consumerist crap that's been foisted upon my generation.

But damn I'm going to be such a cool Halloween dad. My kid/s will have amazing costumes and they'll be involved in the process of making them (no crappy store bought costumes for my offspring!) our house will be so damn eery and when their old enough, we'll host the best damn halloween parties around, of course, considering that I still trick or treat at age 24, those halloween parties might have to fall on a different day.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Did your parents also give you the Qur'an, some Vedas, some Sutras, the Satanic Bible, Dianetics, the Tao Te Ching, Being and Nothingness, and The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster as well?

'Cuz if not, it makes it look like there are 2 options: Christianity and Atheism.  That's a pretty lopsided worldview to give a kid.

Yeah seriously.  I got lucky and found my wife, who's in college for fashion design.  She's gonna hook up our kids so badass for Halloween.

Has anybody started a thread about showing pics of past Halloween costumes?

I'm on it Rubang!

None of you will do any of that.
You will be too busy spoiling them.
Enjoy it's a buzz and a half.

I don't have kids, but if I am as jaded about holidays as I am now if/when I have kids, I'll ignore those holidays. We'll celebrate a holiday that doesn't require gift giving during heavy shopping season and will favor sale prices. ;)

EDIT: After all, kids won't miss what they don't know about.

Celebrate Russian Orthodox Christmas, or South America's "Christmas"  both i believe happen in like February.
