Forums - Nintendo - Key Weakness of the Wii - Graphic Capabilites?

Most normal people don't give Shit about graphics, they want to have fun.

Nor do Hardcore Nintendo fans.

If I really wanted to see every damn leaf on a three or every damn hair on someone I'll go outside in nature or meet with my friends.

Graphics were good enough last gen they don't need to get any better atleast not for people with a bit of imagination.

30+ million sold Wiis....almost 360+PS3 sold thogether.... yeah seems like graphics is very important.

its one of the points, you can't say it isn't important at all.

there is story and gameplay also, its other 2 suck they game will probably suck

The Wii's biggest weakness by far is developer effort/budget, far more than any hardware factor.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

Actually you brought out one point, which actually turns this weakness as a strength. Since it's easy to market games with graphics, this is where the developement focuses, which eventually leads to disappointments, when the actual gameplay is secondary and people stop buying games since their movies look better anyway and they don't need to suffer shitty gameplay (equaling industry crash).
Basically Wii forces the developers to focus on the game itself, instead of focusing to finishing the graphics, when finalized gameplay gets gamers more happier.

The Wii has a lot of games with terrible graphics AND gameplay, where waggle is tacked on just because developers feel obliged to do it, when in actual fact a simple button press would have been the better choice.

Graphics were good enough last gen they don't need to get any better atleast not for people with a bit of imagination.

Is this set in stone forever then? If Nintendo release the Wii6 many years down the line, you wouldn't be bothered if the graphics are the same as the current Wii? It all sounds like excuses to me. Pointing out a negative of the console you own is a cardinal sin on a message board for a lot of people though.

I agree with vanguardian1, the Wii's biggest weakness is the SW itself. Third parties and even recently Nintendo have shown that they dont care too much about quality and that some games can sell even if they are rushed.

There are some exceptions, but the majority of the time it's like this. If Nintendo can overtake this worrying issue I believe the Wii could be the best system of all times, but they need to act fast.

Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.

@horriblebastard: Yes it does. And that's where people complain "3rd party games don't sell on Wii" or "but Nintendo makes so much better games we can't compete", like Carmack as the latest example.

I wouldn't say the "tacking on" is because developers feeling obligated to the controls, it's because their stupid mindsets, where they genuenily believe that people are buying Wiis because of controls and then they just use the controls for the reason the controls are there, without putting any thought to it. If you look at the games Nintendo have published, none tries to use the controls the way they don't fit. Twilight Princess uses them only for the basic slash, MSCF only for tackle, SMG for attack and collecting the starbits, Brawl basically nowhere etc. so Nintendo doesn't use the controls where they don't "belong", unlike many of the third parties.

And your example was just the thing i was talking about. Besides, when looking into future, the games industry is going to survive only as long as people are interested in games as games. When you look at the "hardcore", you could really see the "end of gaming" coming.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Yes and no ...

I have my doubts that the majoirty of consumers would look at the best looking Wii games (that truely take advantage of the Wii) and see them as being all that bad. Part of this comes from seeing people favour systems, and continue to buy software for these systems, when the meaningful difference in graphical capabilities is larger than with the Wii.

On top of this, I think there are some genres which are primarily sold based on how realistic a game looks while most genres are not. On top of this, I think that the number of gamers who are primarily motivated by how a game looks are also in the minority.

Now this isn't to say that some Wii games are not being hurt by their graphics (in fact I think that a game like Medal of Honor Heroes 2 was heavily hurt because it looked very sloppy) or that the Wii will not be effected by the graphical capabilities of other systems, but I don't really see this impact being all that important until the next generation begins and the Wii is outperformed by a system with a similar (or possibly better) user interface.

Wii graphics suck.

The key weakness to the Wii is it isn't future proof. However given Nintendo's strategy I don't think they ever intended the Wii to be a 7-10 yr console. More than likely 4-5 yrs on top and the next 3 phasing it out as they release N6.

What I always like to call Wii is its an intermediate console for Nintendo. It's mean to disrupt the market to setup up a future console. Why do this? Well if you can all of a sudden change the market to where brand appeal is highest for you then you can release a more pricey console next gen to make more money through software and hardware. Not to mention gives you the luxury of starting earlier. But mainly about getting the Nintendo brand significant market share and brand appeal to setup N6.

This is what I believe to be Ninty's strategy so longetivity I guess is Wii's main weakness... which is tied in with this.... but it's only a weakness if we are looking at it purely from a straightforward stance.

I disagree. I think the wii is about as future proofed as the PS3 or 360. Other wise Nitendo would be still in last place. I think Nintendo would love for this gen to be 10 years because they would have that many years of wining this gen. Sony and Microsoft or the one's who would have to push a new gen to defeat the wii. As long as both the PS3 and 360 are still current, the wii will still be the console of choice. In ten or even 20 years gaming will still be about game play and not graphics.

Hello Captain Obvious Wii's Graphics are definitely its weakness but it sells millions of consoles every month. Wii sells the most consoles that is all that matters to Ninty fans.
