Forums - General - So, can someone tell me again why communism is so bad?

It's obvious that it works for China.

Everytime you see an american network refer to china, they always say "Communist China". They don't do that with any other country with their political affliance slapped to their country name when they speak of them.

They say it as if Communism is bad. but if it works for them, why is that so bad? Did they not notice that they are emerging as the next superpower? or the fact that they moved from third to first world so fast? or how about them over-taking americans in terms of world power in the near future?

I just don't get why communism is being blasted for being evil when obviously the chinese people approve of it. They only hate on China because of their so called "human rights" issue with Taiwan. And the people of Taiwan btw would be not part of China's emerging economy if it wasn't for them so i don't see why they are whining about it.

Like any country wants for themself, stay out of their business.

In America the common person simply views communism as bad because it is the polar opposite of our capitalistic ways. Personally I'm happy for the Chinese if it works for them, but I still prefer to stay in a capitalist county. But to each his own.

...

this isn't going to end well.

The idea is always better than the way it is applied.

I don't know too much on these kind of things, and I don't really know how China's communism works, but from my limited knowledge of communism I come to the conclusion that basically the Goverment controls almost everything you do on a massive scale, and that imo is bad. I think there should be a good balance in control that you government has.

It's funny you should say this. I suggest looking at polls from the 30's, to see how people felt in and about Italy and Germany before World War II. You'll find their citizens were some of the happiest in the world. I guess that means fascism's cool, huh?

Alternatively, China's people may be satisfied with their government for the same reason the Russians are and the Germans/Italians were: the economy is hot, which makes it easy to be happy. Once that stops, as it inevitably will, I'm pretty sure the lack of freedoms and other repressive measures, combined with the lack of regard for Chinese citizens' health and safety in favor of a quick buck will lead to a radically different internal opinion.

As to the rest of the world, their opinion may be negative because China doesn't really respect human rights, is keeping repressive regimes afloat abroad, and is a major pollutor. Granted those qualities are not exclusive to them, but the other countries that act similarly are also pretty reviled.

As to the communist part, China pretty much abandoned that philosophy a decade ago. Capitalism is what they've embraced nowadays, and as Marx himself would have cheerfully told you communism and capitalism are not the same thing at all.

Communism isn't used in the way you think the term means.

Refer to Cold War.

Paragraphs like this pretty much sum it up. The attitude surrounding China right now is so silly and full of hype. Is China really going to be so much more of a success story than the British Empire, Germany, Soviet Union, Ottoman Empire, United States, etc.? China is going to be a world superpower, but that doesn't mean that America will lose a good chunk of its economic power. Hype China up if you will.

Besides, India looks like it will join the U.S. and China as a world superpower, and it seems to be doing just fine with a capitalist democracy. And many Americans have constantly viewed Communism as threatening simply because they believe it unites every Communist nation under some crazy scheme to take down Democracy.

Its not communism that is bad, its other issues that are problematic with China. The biggest issue is the censorship and lack of freedom of speech. There are many people rotting in prison for speaking their mind and disagreeing with the Chinese government.

So I don't have a problem with Communism, but I do have a problem with China's policies and I don't think they should have been awarded the Olympics.

THREE POINTS, SUCKAS:

1) The U.S. is not capitalist at all. Every law we have that gets in the way of the invisible hand is a blow against capitalism. Yet these are all human rights issues, because without these laws the invisible hand would fist us into hell. Here are some examples:

8 hour shifts.
40 hour work weeks.
It's illegal to put 14 year olds to work in factories.
(Real American heroes fought and took bullets and died for these rights.)
Also, antitrust laws to stop monopolies.
(This was considered a huge blow to capitalism at the time. In a purely capitalist magic ideal 100% free market, we'd have to allow monopolies and assume that a smaller company would come up with competition and save the consumer. However, the bigger company buys the smaller company. Every time.)

2) China is really fucked up. It's not just Taiwan. It's Tibet. It's Tiananman Square. It's censorship of the entire internet. It's a total lack of transparency in government (we suffer from that last one in the U.S. as well actually).

3) Communism isn't inherently evil. If you compare communism and capitalism at their 100% pure magical impossible ideal levels, communism is much nicer. It's all about sharing. Pure capitalism is all about competition and survival of the fittest and is completely willing to let sick, hungry, insane, and homeless people die because they can't compete. Every country is somewhere in between the two because both ideals are impossible. It's impossible to get 100% of people to share when you have 1 greedy asshole. You gotta lock him up, kick him out, let him wander the streets, kill him, or "reeducate him." It's impossible to get 100% of people to compete when you have 1 sick person. You gotta let him die or the whole country becomes socialist when they take care of him.

The U.S. is pretty damn socialist with all its welfare and food stamps and taxes (a form of redistribution of wealth) but for some reason many Americans are ashamed to admit it. The U.S. hates communism because it is in denial of its own socialism. Americans hate welfare, but we're afraid of another depression so we can't just drop it.

China is socialist too. If they were 100% communist, why do they have a rich powerful elite class and a starving working class? If they were 100% communist, why do they have McDonalds?

But calling them "Communist China" every time you mention them on the news is pretty stupid. It's like all our news reporters grew up being trained to hate communism by watching too much G.I.Joe or something.

True communism, or the original ideals of communism, is not bad. Soviet Russia started out that way and everything was okay, but then it turned into the communism that history knows, which is bad. That's the problem, whilst true communism is highly regarded, it never works in practice (google and find out the difference because I can't be bothered explaining it).

As for China, I think mrduckbear you need to travel to China and visit one of the rural areas and come back and tell us whether or not communism is working.

The farming industry in China is on the verge of collapse, because outside of the large, populated, industrial cities, everywhere else is basically a 2nd world country. The farmers get paid so little for their crops that most save to send their children to school in the city for them to start a new life. That's why the average age of a farmer is very high. Problem is, eventually they will die and since their kids have gone on to the business world, the farming industry in china will cave in.

China is not a 1st world country, the major cities are 1st world but every other part of China is in poverty.

A country that cracks down on free speech, heavily censors their media and kicks citizens out of their homes in order to make way for the olympic stadiums is not going great. AND this is all to their own people, let alone the people of other countries.
