MARIO

Mario isn't even mario anymore. I bet they just have a model with preloaded animations and then they make liek 50 games and stick the animation in their and sell it :) lol. Super Mario Galaxy could have been any other person and still be as good, of course it wouln't sell anywhere near as well but still be as good.

There are more FF games out this gen than Mario games.

The Mario games have sold better.

The GR rank is 75% average for FF games. Mario games have 79.2% as an average.

Mario Kart - same game for the last 3 gens. Improved visuals, and new control scheme (in Wiis case) should only be updated once per gen.

I have been trying not to say anything here for a number of reasons. I mean I could get into a fanboyish debate about how each version is actually different, or how it only comes out once a genration or blah blah blah. That all seems pretty pointless with you as you just wanted to take a swipe at the series and thats cool. What I just realized though is you include Mario Kart: Double Dash in the list of Mario Kart games that never change with that sentence though. Seriously, the only racer I know of to support 2 player co-op in a single car/kart did nothing to change the game?

I disagree that the game was any different. As a single player if I pick up mario kart 64 or double dash or the wii version its the same game. There probably are minor differences that people who play them a lot can point otu but as a perso that rented the wii version and breefly owned the 64 and DD I don't see any difference. In 2 players versus its quite fun still but its still the same. They did add 2 player co-op in DD but that was such a minor adition to a game taht came out 7 years later...

To quote a MK:DD Wikipedia for you here - "IGN were also critical towards Double Dash!! for not progressing beyond its predecessor, calling the game a "mediocre effort"

In any case, it does come out once per gen...I was just stating that I hope it stays that way.

Basically all the franchises that are mainly multiplayer games. Because with those games, you don't care about too much repetition anyways, you can play them all day long. When there are new ones all the time, you and your mates have to learn the new tricks, maps, courses or whatever, which means there's less time that you actually enjoy with great multiplayer matches.

So those are typical games that come to my mind: (As a Nintendo player, I can't list games that aren't on Nintendo platforms)

Mario Kart
Smash Brothers
Mario Party
Mario Sports (one per Sport is fine)
F-Zero
Wave Race
FPS franchises (this one is a little special because you can also play them alone)
FIFA, Madden etc.

Basically, Sports, Party, Fighting and Racing games are the ones that shouldn't come out more than once in a generation.

There's no problem when there's a second Mario platformer, FF RPG or Zelda adventure during the same gen, even if it doesn't innovate much, because it's just funnier to get through a new adventure instead of the old one for a second time. Nobody complained when there where three FF on the SNES that had about the same graphics and gameplay, or that there where three Donkey Kong platformers on the SNES, and there's no reason to complain as long as the games are actually good.

Here are some games that I think should come out only once per videogame system cycle and my reasoning why.

Ridge Racer/Wipeout  - The gameplay for these games has been pretty much solidified during ps1 era and all the new games since just update the graphics, tracks and tunes... Don't get me wrong, these games still rock but there really is no need to make it more than once every gen.

Soul Calubur/ Virtua Fighter/ Tekken/DOA  - Back when 3D fighting games were new and fresh it was cool to see tekken and virtua fighter series 2-3 times every generation. However those times have passed and these days it seems hard for devs to come up with new radical features for these games. Just take a look at DOA4, VF5 and now Soul Cal 4 and compare them to their predecessors...not much has changed. I think one of these games every gen would be enough in order for devs to collect their ideas and deliver something new every gen.

Mario Kart - same game for the last 3 gens. Improved visuals, and new control scheme (in Wiis case) should only be updated once per gen.

Tomb Raider - Its getting hard to tell when these games are being ported from PS2, updated for PS360, or designed for the Wii. Seems like the series is all over the place in terms of quality and quantity. One epicly amazing game per gen would fix this and give the series the credibility it once had.

Anyone else care to give their 2 cents on this? What games should be done only once per gen?

 ^thats a pretty good list.

although i would add flagship titles for all 3 formats.
