Forums - Gaming - Who else is sad that Nintendo is winning/won this gen ?

Why does that make you sad? Just because you don't like the wii doesn't mean that it's bad. It's a good thing that so many people enjoy the console. Gaming isn't about winning or losing, it's about having fun and playing games. So what if more people enjoy the wii? You still have fun on your console.

Your tastes are not better: you cannot possibly convince me that something like God of War is "deeper" or something than Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. They're both stupid, insipid entertainment. The difference is that you happen to personally like one, but not the other.

Yes, your personal tastes are going out of style. My tastes in music have been out of style for over a century. This isn't something new.

Huh i said my tastes were better ? i don't recall that bod.

@noname , good analysis i'm not so much worried about the gaming i know and love dying i think there will always be a market for it . I'm worried about a decline , a shift in priority away from what I like. That's not to say what I like is superior in away way to what's popular right now I'm just not happy priority is being shifted away.

I getcha (and sorry for not being more succinct!). Honestly though I wouldn't worry that there'll be too much of a shift: Yes, developers are opening studios devoted to "casual gaming" (with names like Wee First...), but those studios are often composed of new hires (usually from the same studios that closed down elsewhere) rather than from the guys who're making Spore or Mass Effect.

But they are, for the most part, NOT hiring new people to make more games like God of War or Mass Effect. If games like God of War were the blockbuster, run away hit of the generation (instead of the Wii), we would not only see God of War 3 and Mass Effect 2, but we'd see tons of studios opening up to make games like that; instead, the best we can say is that most of the studios that do exist aren't shutting down.

I'm not sure we've reached a point of literal decline yet, but certainly stagnation. We aren't going to be seeing any big, new studios coming of age in "traditional" gaming this generation; all the new studios will be set to task on more casual fare. But there won't be any Rockstars or Bungies breaking out this time around: there will be Nintendo and Popcap.

Why would any1 want nintedo to win, if they do they will become thye biggest childs company. They promote sterotypes!

A Japanese company makes their mascot a fat Italian sterotype, who gets sucked into his toilet into a fantasy world, where he has to save a princess and talks to SHROOMS! Then when u finally beat bowser there is a stupid shroom guy and says, "sorry mario the princess is in a different castle."

"A Fat Italian Midget Plumber," (very evil right there) who travels thru toilets to save princesses…

Super Mario Bros.. Doesn’t that mean that Mario is his last name? WHAT IS MARIOS FIRST NAME!

Which is why I didn't quote you in my post: it's a generalized comment to those who love games like God of War but dislike games like Mario and Sonic.

I really don't know what to tell other than "oh well." Yes, your personal tastes in games will decline. So, eventually, will the tastes of those who like Mario and Sonic style games -- and thus, the world turns.

Just out of curiosity, Million, when did you start gaming?

I'm 17 and my earliest memory of gaming was when I was about .... 5 Maybe ? I played Starfox on the SNES and Time Chrisis on the Sega Mega drive with guncom.

Nintendo has not really won anything, Sony lost touch with the PlayStation fanbase and they are paying for it. Next gen things will start to go back to a more normal setting. Nintendo will not be able to keep this going next gen, Sony and Microsoft have learned from their mistakes and we will see an entire different war going next gen.

1. Next generation doesn't start until we say it starts.

2. Sony domination begins Nov 2006.

3. Sony domination begins next month.

4. Sony domination begins next quarter.

5. Sony domination begins next year.

6. Sony domination begins next generation. *

* - Which according to Sony and many fanboys starts in 2016 thanks to the 10 year plan.

1) WTF are you talking about?
2) I for one have never said anything about Sony domination in my entire time on this site.
3-6) Same as above.

And based on your last sentance you completely misunderstood the idea of a 10year plan. I also don't expect Sony to "win" this gen or next gen in the sense of selling the most systems. But the succes Nintendo has seen this gen will not carry over to the next gen. Sony will not produce a system that is over $600 for the US, and over $1000 in some other countries. Microsoft will learn from this generation and based on those facts each company will produce a system that will have a greater acceptance by the gaming community.

Too bad the industry doesn't work like that.

At this point and beyond, it will be hard for anyone to challange Nintendo. The blue ocean stratigy is extremly hard for Sony and Microsoft to reproduce due to it relying heavily on well made 1st party games. Nintendo developer the Wii with that in mind from the ground up. It's has a clean look, not intimidating, a simple, yet catchy name, easy to use control scheme, and games that take advantage of all of this. This is part of the reason why Microsoft can't break into the casual market despite how hard they try.

Sony's weakness is that they have killed their brand name. They are in a possition of weakness right now with buyers and a PS4 will harder to push. However, not only that, but they have scared away third parties. This generation, they are finding it much more profitable to make a game with a XBox version, or produce a game for the Handhelds or Wii. When Sony first started, they had the upperhand on Nintendo by not trying to take 3rd parties for all their worth and basically treat them nicer. Nintendo no longer does that, tand these third parties are being won over by Microsoft and Nintendo. It will be much harder to win them back. Not to mention they are losing their bond with Sony which was kept due to better threatment and more chances to make money. Now it's harder to make a PS3 game and there are better alternatives. Even if Sony goes back to the PS2 modle, it will be hard to reverse the damage done by the PS3.

Wgat Viper was talking about was that Sony fans have a bad habit of saying it will happen "next time". The PS will dominate in 07, 08, 09, next cycle. The same fanboy rederic, which you also gave.

Your like the people who said it will be hard for anyone to challenge Sony this gen (look how it turned out) every generation is effectivley a new race , yes Nintendo will have an advantage but their reputation won't save them if they have a product which doesn't apeal to the consumer. Sony has more development resources than both Microsoft and Nintendo (not combined) and are well renowned for the 1st party titles ( i'm not going to argue that their games are superior as that would just be opinion based.)

Sony's weakness is that they have killed their brand name.

lol I seriously dought that , 120 million PS2's , outselling it's main competitor worldwide with a higher price point is mainly due the playstation brand . I'll admit the playstation band has declined in status but it's far from "killed". Sony's weakness is that they've released an overly expensive console which doesn't apeal to the new demograpic that nintendo discovered ( to put it simply).

They are in a possition of weakness right now with buyers and a PS4 will harder to push.

No , no and no ..... Sony will have to do what nintendo did learn from their mistakes, re-evaluate their strategies , and change . Selling a PS4 which apeals to it's target audience or creates new audiences won't be a challenge if they get the right formula , no one ever said "oh look how bad the GC did there's no way in hell i'm buying a Wii even if it has games i do like".

however, not only that, but they have scared away third parties. This generation, they are finding it much more profitable to make a game with a XBox version, or produce a game for the Handhelds or Wii. This last part was very confusing , stop talking about this damage garbage it's not true , the PS3 has not "damaged" anything i'll agree that it's put them in a bad position but Sony's future prospects are still intact. Developers will always go with the most viable option they did it last gen , this gen and will do it in generations to come. I really wish i hadn't taken the time to respond to this analysis i stupidly assumed it would be good because it was long.

I am not mad as long as I get quality hardcore games. If because of the Wii core games stop coming out then that means that Nintendo is destroying the industry.

i think it had alreasy won it, still i sold mine because its really the worst for me

Wow, so many people here can't grasp the basic fundamentals of economics. Now I'm no guru (hell, I'm an engineer), but this kind of stuff is common sense!

I'm sorry guys, but you can't blame a new and emerging market for killing off an old one. If the hardcore market dies it's not because the casual market appeared, it's because the hardcore consumer base simply isn't large enough to sustain the market. It's simple supply and demand. Just because another market is bigger and more profitable doesn't mean no one is going to cater to the smaller market, you will get exactly as many hardcore games as the hardcore userbase can sustain, and not any more or any less. Casual gaming won't effect the size of the hardcore consumer base and therefore won't effect the size of the hardcore market, all we'll see is a larger pool of money in gaming in general.

If your hardcore gaming dies you can't blame it on anyone but the hardcore gamers and the companies that cater towards them.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!
