Forums - Microsoft - Square wants FFXIII on 360 because of “the success of our console,” says Microsoft

So they're going to delay the release of a completed game purely because of the "success" of the 360.

That's a whole lota success then.

Since when has it been completed? Do you have a copy that I can play? Man... you are AWESOME!!

Just kiss the tip.

ok....that was an angry post....lol. But anyway, when Halo 3 launched, it had an attach rate of about 50% in the US (360's only strong hold):

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/17/halo-3-bought-by-52-of-us-xbox-360-owners/

And when I looked at attach rates, and compared it to what he was trying to make a talking point out of relative to the 360, that's when I compared the two different genres of games.

Project Sylpheed's not a JRPG. It's a Wing Commanderesque take on the old Silpheed games.

I just looked that game up....but it still doesn't change the fact that the 360 didn't rake SE any money in with it. The VP said "SE simply couldn't ignore the 360s install base".....yet they embraced it before (twice) and it resulted in dismal failures (twice)

Sylpheed didn't sell well, no, but it was a dramatic shift in style from scrolling shooters to 3D space sim and received overwhelmingly mediocre reviews. I don't see how 360 owners can be blamed for not jumping all over it. Square was only the publisher, not the dev, btw.

Not sure how you reckon FFXI was a "dismal failure" on the 360. They should have turned some profit off of circa 200k sales + subscription fees, as the port couldn't have been that expensive.

I mean, there's no doubt that MS is grandstanding here. I'm sure Square could ignore the 360. But why should they?

If Square Enix really supports the 360 because of "the success of our console" and not because "of the size of our checkbook", why aren't they putting any games on Wii (well, apart from those that are sequel from Gamecube games like FFCC)?

There's a reason why some publishers aren't putting some games on Wii... the hardware isn't nearly as powerful, and some companies worry that either they will not be able to meet a level of expectation or will have to "dumb down" the graphics, etc. too much to port "down".  I'm not going to argue that this is good or bad... depends on the circumstances.  However, I do understand why some companies take this approach.

On the flip side, there are games that work a lot better on the Wii.  Raving Rabbids plays really well on the Wii but is considered by some reviewers as "lackluster" on the 360 due to the missing motion-control element.

If I were SE, I'd also consider the 360's userbase. With the direction where the sales of the main Final Fantasy titles have been going, could anyone blame SE for doing this? Final Fantasy titles have dropped in sales while the cost of development has only risen while also considering the fact that the combined userbases of both 360 and PS3 does not equate to the PS2 when FFXII was first released. Also, JRPG have taken a back seat to games like sports and FPS's while they also have to combat the casual market with games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Reality speaks here.

Quoted so everybody can read this post again.  So far it's made more sense than the rest of the thread, combined.

I don't know the actual numbers, but it's really hard to say that FFXI on the 360 was "dismal."  As an MMO, SE was finally able to convince Microsoft to use their own servers to pull away from the closed environment established by Live.  This allowed SE to employ and opened environment to all platfoms can play together in the FFXI MMO environment.  So since SE already had their servers established with PC and PS2 users and FFXI 360 users continue with their monthly payments, I don't see why an assumed low FFXI 360 userbase should be of much concern.

Agreed, well said

360 Install base in America alone is the reason for the multi-plat release.....simple as that. Throw in a similiar if not = install base in NA and their is a second no-brainer.

I agree with Jordahn's post regarding why it is a timed dual-release in America and NA. Now, I am not the best at math, but allowing 26+ million more poeple the oportunity to buy this game and generate profits, seems pretty simple to me. Even if it is at the cost of a delayed release.

Obviously the 360 is a solid 8 on the success-o-meter

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

m$ is money hatting!!!
There is no other reason... Last remant, Star ocean 4, ff13 all games in the cards for ps3 and m$ stopped them all from either coming out on ps3 or coming out before M$ verison comes out.

People who think this has anything to do with the Fan base are very stupid. Its all about money and SE will make more of it on the wii and ps3 because of the fanbase in Japan. thats where most of SE games sell.

money Hatting M$ thats it.

lol@ people who think other wise

Its because of SO4 and The Last Remnant that I smell a money hat as well. And its pretty sad that most of the money probably just ended up in Wada's pocket (especially since it's under the radar) not your average programmer or artist at S-E.

Also, someone posted some interview where Nintendo boss Iwata said nintendo didn't want to compete with Sony and M$ in the movie dept. because Sony has a movie studio and M$ has "a lot of Money". Why else would the M$ $$$ even come into play in that interview? Answer: because they can buy all the talent over, netflix included. I repeat: think of Chelsea in the English Premiership
