Only when players begin exploring areas in the wasteland will there be a noticeable difference.

Speaking to Tom's Games, id Software co-founder John Carmack has explained exactly where corners will need to be cut in order to fit upcoming open-world FPS Rage onto the Xbox 360's DVD format.

First of all, Xbox 360 owners shouldn't be too distraught, with Carmack noting, "all of the key scenes, the things anyone is going to take a screenshot of are going to look exactly the same on both platforms. They'll get the high quality compression."

Where the PS3 game will see a visual improvement is in the areas players won't usually be seeing.

"But if you go into some areas in the wasteland, like behind a fence where nobody will typically go and explore, this is where the 360 version may look a little blurry compared to the PS3," said Carmack.

Carmack also revealed that a two DVD solution for Xbox 360 looks most likely, despite a three DVD option enabling better compression.

"We're pretty much resigned to the fact that we're going to make it fit onto two DVDs on the 360," he said. "Plus there would be a lot of disc switching if we went to three DVDs, and since the game is split between two different wasteland environments, two DVDs should work well. That's the only thing the PS3 has going for it over the 360 - more gigs."

do you think only in wastland areas ps3 version will look better? or do you belive this sounds like a bit of damage control to keep 360 owners happy to make them look forward to the game. i think both games will play the same and given the footage ive seen on trailers it looks very neat indeed.

if this game is good and certainly looks good, il buy this on ps3, multipayer should also be quite neat.
