Forums - Gaming - RUMOR: Sony to publish Ghostbusters as PS3 exclusive

Dodece said:
For the moment this game is vaporware, and it has basically been canceled. The parties involved just want to find someone to buy it out of their hands, and probably at a reasonable loss. In other words the publisher felt the game had epic fail written all over it, and they do not want to throw good money after bad. They have accepted it was a misadventure, but would be more then happy to make back some of what they spent in development costs.

That said this rumor actually has a high probability of coming to pass. For no other reason then the fact that Sony Pictures does not want to see the license tarnished, and their contract probably guaranteed them a certain percentage of sales. So it has a certain symmetry when you realize that if they get desperate they will ask a favor of the gaming division to bail them out. The same way they bailed the gaming division out on a number of occasions. Remember those free movie pack ins, exclusive game development, and other free content in the pipe.

Basically if nobody else bites Sony Pictures is going to play the you owe me one card, and they will get the gaming division to bail the project out. Not that it is necessarily a black hole for them. They will not be paying for full development costs in this case. They will be paying for a portion of that. Think of it as buying a used car that has depreciated through neglect.

Tell that to twesterm....

Hope it's not true. I'm really looking forward to getting this for the Wii.

The publishing rights for the game may be expensive since the publisher would have to pay for development of all the versions. This would mean Sony would have to pay for the 360 version and not even release it if this rumor is true.... we all know that won't happen. I expect a company like EA or Ubisoft to pick it up.

Who would pick up an almost guarantee lose though. Obviously they spent way too much money developping a poor game.

What?  How does the games division owe the movie division anything?  If anybody owes somebody else something, the movie division owes the games division for pretty much single handedly winning the hd format "war" for blu ray, and took the pr hit of a $600 console and $3.3 billion in losses.

I can't see this happening, but, I have already read stuff about Sony Publishing the game next year to coincide with the anniversary of GB. Also, the development team behind the game have stated that they would have loved for it to be PS3 specific as they would have been able to do so much more.

So here's an idea....why don't Sony buy a timed exclusive rights to publish the PS3 version of the game as long as the developer enhances the experience for the PS3, to make it the definitive version...and then the other versions can be released slightly later.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

Unless Sony can snag it for a steal, they should just stay away from this mess. And last time I checked, this game wasn't even in development for PSP.

Need I say more about this "rumor."

(BEGIN EDIT ADD) Also, for that to happen, Sony would have to make a major investment -- probably not one worth making on a game from a 25-year old movie franchise.

But more to the point, if you are not going to make a James Bond game exclusive, why would you make a Ghostbusters one.

Sony just wants it delayed for the 25th anniversary of the film -- that is all it care about. (END EDIT ADD)
