Forums - Sony - PS3 is only 'bright spot' for Blu-ray, says report

BOOOOOOOOO Bluray sucks!!!!!!!

ok, got that out of my system. This has absolutely nothing to do with Sony or the PS3.

If I had an HDTV, I still wouldn't be interested in a bluray player until they are less than $200 and the movies are at most a few dollars more than the DVD's.

Instead I would buy an $80 dvd player with hdmi out and upconverting tech. Essentially the same thing in my eyes and that of the mass consumer. As evidenced by this report.

now the question is: is PS3 helping BluRay or is it taking away the buyers from other BluRay players, as it is still among the cheapest options.

In all honesty, I don't really care too much either except...

Planet Earth, it's just so gorgeous.  An upconverting DVD player doesn't do it.

One of the main reasons why I need to replace my PS3 is that Doc.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

But PS3 does exist, is here, is pushing BR well and and "gamers" are buying Blu-Ray discs.

Other BR players don't sell well because the PS3 exists.

2009 and 2010 will see steadily increasing adoption, and in 2011 more Blu-Ray dscs will be sold than DVDs. In part because the studios will force it, a la Warner ditching HD-DVD to make sure only Blu-Ray is available by the Christmas season. Thank you, Warner Bros.

I disagree. This can be seen by the fact that Blu-ray Disc sales are pathetically low at this point compared to DVD.

At the time the Blu-ray assosiation anounced 11 million in sales, DVD had sold well over 80 million in the United States.

2009 and 2010 seeing steady adoption isn't guranteed, they will ditch HD-DVD but the theatres won't be ditching DVD anytime soon. That's what it would take to get most people to jump i think, cause they don't see the value there.

When you take into account economic problems too... you've got to worry.

Entertainment is pretty depression proof, however i gotta think there is an effect that balances it more toward "cheaper" entertainment.

as iam still a 360 fan i said yes true lol.

I have HDTV and still i have no plans to get blu ray. To tell you the truth i just do not see the difference.
Sure it looks slightly shinier, but not enough to justify an additional investment. And at three time the price of regular dvd's, Blu ray DVD"s are just too expensive.
I think people are have just become immune to this new pushed adoption policy by the market. I bought the dvd player because it means i did not have to fill my house with huge vhs diskettes, and the quality upgrade was rather large compared to DVD vs Blu-ray. The only reason i bought an HDTV, was not for the quality of the video output, but because this technology allowed me to get a TV about times the size of my current television which before was not really possible. But the blu-ray is a gimmick i just don't see any need to upgrade, and i think a lot of people feel the same way. When the blu-ray is offering dvd's for 5 euros' and blu-ray players for 29.95, well them maybe it might be worth the investment. But this better happen in the next couple of years, or i am afraid blu-ray may die the same death that HDTV did. To tell you the truth, i would not be so disappointed, as to me blu-ray encompasses what i feel about the ps3. Sure it is an improvement to its predecessor. But a slight tweak (as far as end user perception is concerned) will fail, if priced at several time the level of the perceived improvement.
Undoubtebly though one day, the PS3 will cost $250 and a blu-ray player will cost $39,99, and if either my wii, or my dvd player breakdown, i may consider buying one of the two (after replacing the Wii of course).

Incorrect. Blu Ray and HD-DVD were a dying breed, before the PS3 used it. The PS3 makes stand alone players look bad. The true sales should exist from stand alone players.

It's helping....it's not taking away.

Not contradicting you, but just asking because I haven't seen the stat: can you post a link with the relevant statistics?

It can't be number of discs divided by number of Blu-Ray players, because of course a number of gamer kids didn't buy the PS3 to watch Blu-Ray.  We need number of Blu-Ray discs sold divided by years on the market, vs DVD over same period.

And as DVD is an undisputed success, Blu-Ray sales would have to indeed be pathetically low to be considered any kind of failure...simply being behind DVD at the same period is no kind of objection, especially since HD-DVD was launched first -- and backed by Microsoft -- before being buried by Blu-Ray.

The bold is just what I said.

Your last sentence is false: true sales should be recorded as true Blu-Ray disc sales, with PS3 recognized as a huge factor helping the sales.
