PS3 is only 'bright spot' for Blu-ray, says report

5 August 2008 14:35 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 27 comments

According to a new research report by ABI research entitled "Blu-ray: Consumer Survey Results", the PlayStation 3 is the only 'bright spot' for the Blu-ray format right now, and without it the format would be struggling "mightily" to reach any consumer acceptance.

“While you might think gamers purchase fewer movie discs than others, we didn’t see any significant evidence of that in our results,”
said ABI principle analyst Steve Wilson. “PS3 console shipments will go a long way to help bring down manufacturing costs and drive down Blu-ray player prices.”

Outside of these PS3 sales however, mass consumer adoption of Blu-ray is growing at a pace much slower then the industry would like, added ABI.

The report, which surveyed 1000 people, found that over 50 percent of the respondents had not plans to buy a Blu-ray player ever, and that an additional 23 percent are likely to buy, but not before 2009. Most of those polled also declared they would not upgrade simply because they do not have an HDTV and do not plan to buy one. Others simply felt standard definition DVD quality was "good enough." 50 percent of those polled rated Blu-ray quality as "much better" than standard DVD, but a large 40 percent said it was only "somewhat better."

ABI also added that they do not expect to see Blu-ray player prices to fall before 2009, and that the PS3 was still the bang for your buck if you do intend to upgrade. “We expect that [Blu-ray] player prices will remain above $300 for Tier One models for the remainder of this year."

We all new BR is where it is because of PS3 already. DVD is just so imbedded that it will be awhile before BR takes over if it does at all.

2009: Year of the PS3? :D

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

Yeah... i've been saying that for a while now but people don't want to believe it.

Actual per disc adoption rates are gigantically below what DVD had by this time...

Blu-ray assosiation of course perfers the "Player' base instead of DVD base which of course is deceptive because it includes PS3s. (And PS2s had not yet been introduced i believe, or are just not counted.)

So true. This is what Sony risked their exclusives for to force into the market.

BR doesn't have to be dominant, just sustainable.

There's no reason why multiple formats can't be supported. Best Buy and other big retailers were more than happy to expand shelf space because they make more per disc than DVD.

Laser Disc went for a long time, Bluray already has more users and revenue.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Wait...remind me what videogame system they slipped Laser disc into again? LOL

But PS3 does exist, is here, is pushing BR well and and "gamers" are buying Blu-Ray discs.

Other BR players don't sell well because the PS3 exists.

2009 and 2010 will see steadily increasing adoption, and in 2011 more Blu-Ray dscs will be sold than DVDs.  In part because the studios will force it, a la Warner ditching HD-DVD to make sure only Blu-Ray is available by the Christmas season.  Thank you, Warner Bros.

That was my point, it wasn't in a game system, sold less and lasted a long time.

The article says that gamers don't buy less movies so there you go.

I swear, I defend Sony and everyone jumps on me... I'll start being more fanboyish.
