Forums - Sony - PS3 not Verizon friendly - Is this true?

I bought a 360 about a month back and refunded it, and I'm now trying out a ps3 which I also plan on refunding so I can try out each console and see which I prefer before making my final choice. I got the ps3 with MGS4 and while it was an amazing game, the singleplayer lasted pretty short for me so I decided to try out the multiplayer, and this is where the probs came up trying to connect to the PSN.

I got all the IP info from my pc using CMD -> ipconfig /all, and entered everything the way it should be. I wasn't surprised it didn't work the first time...I got a DNS error (80710102), the same error I was getting when trying to connect to Xbox Live. All it took was one call to customer support to get Live running though - I was told to manually enter the physical address, something that you can't change on the ps3. So I looked around the internet for some solutions, tried many, none worked. Called customer support, they told me stuff I already knew or suggested calling my ISP, which is Verizon. Eventually I did, and all I got out of it was some DNS servers that didn't work. At this point, a few days passed since I've been trying to get it working. Some days I tried searching for hours and on some other days I wouldn't even bother. I tried again and got the same error, which was getting really frustrating.

I decided to ask on another forum why I kept getting this error, and gave as much info as I can. I was told that Verizon isn't ps3 friendly. I told them that I connect my ps3 directly to my DSL modem, and they said that was the prob right there and said that I have to get a router.

Do I really have to buy one? I wouldn't be surprised if I had to since I've tried tons of different things to fix this prob and none have worked, but I'd be a bit more tempted to buy a 360 if this was the case, though part of me would prefer having a ps3.

I have verizon DSL but am wireless and it runs perfect (sans the occasional IP address change that makes me have to reset the router, but no big deal.)

I never connected straight from the wall to me PS3.

You should be able to connect your PS3 directly to your ISP connection. I would not recommend it though as the PS3 is an open device that is not firewalled. If I were you I would purchase a router it has a built in firewall plus you won't have to disconnect one thing for the other.

You do not need a router with Verizon DSL unless you want to add more than one device. The dsl modem will hand off a Fast Ethernet connection. You don't need to configure anything on the modem or the PS3. The PS3 will pull a dhcp address from the modem without any additional configuration.

You will need to reboot the modem when you switch the device that is connected to the ethernet port. Verizon records the physical address of the device.

I have Verizon DSL and it works great with my PS3.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Does Verizon really limit you to one device per connection, unless you call tech support? Ugh. At least with most other services you can at least reset the modem to get it to allow a new device...

Oh well. If you get a router, you'll be able to connect whatever you want.

It doesn't limit you to one device, but you need to reset the modem when you switch devices.  You only need a router if you are connecting more than 1 device.  PS3 + Verizon DSL works great.  No config necessary.
