You do not need a router with Verizon DSL unless you want to add more than one device. The dsl modem will hand off a Fast Ethernet connection. You don't need to configure anything on the modem or the PS3. The PS3 will pull a dhcp address from the modem without any additional configuration.
You will need to reboot the modem when you switch the device that is connected to the ethernet port. Verizon records the physical address of the device.
I have Verizon DSL and it works great with my PS3.
