Forums - PC - Windows Vista 64-bit advice.

(Pretend money isn't an issue)

Hey, I'm gonna get a second drive for my gaming PC.  A 10k RPM with loads of cache.

Do you think I should dual boot 64 so I can take advantage of more RAM?

Do you think I should partition or use the 10k exclusively? (Edit: for 64)

Are DX10 and DX11 games supporting more ram?

Add anything you can think of here.

Current specs:

Intel Quad Core Q6600

4 GB RAM (1000MHz)

7200 RPM 250GB HDD

Nvidia 8800GT 512 MB RAM

Vista 32

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

First of how many gigs is the 10k
second vista 32 supports up to 4 giigs of ram so you wouldnt need 64 bit to read the ram unless you have more than 4.
third I would get 64 bit because it is more secure, is not clutterd with unsecure code, and is futureproof(for now).
there is a drawback to 64bit such as no more 16 bit drivers or program support, uses more memory than 32bit, also it is hard to find antivirus systems( for now)
Also your computer pushes more to 64bit side than the 32bit.

You should partition the 10k because there is a chance you will have a gmae that does not work with 64bit

if you want, 64-bit OSs are better for future games.

64 bit currently is not good, I have one and it doesn't have full support of 32 bit things.

I run 64-bit Vista on my new laptop and I haven't had any real issues.

Core 2 Duo T7350 (2.0GHZ)
4GB RAM (1066mhz)
FSB 1066mhz
512MB GeForce 9700GTS

just out of curiosity what laptop is that

Thats a sexy lap top, thats what it is. I have had no problems with x64 except one thing, I cant make it boot up with my 4 gigs all in. I know theres a bug, and a patch and SP1 is all supposed to fix this, but I have done all those things and it still boots into a Blue Screen of Death. Even formatted and tried it all over again, no dice. I think its a BIOS thing, so I have to take it to the shop. :(

Anyways, like I said, I have been running games from 1994 on this thing, and all sorts of programs and not a single problem, very secure and Aero is seckzy.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

Avoid 64 bits version at all cost... usually there is only few games builded with 64 bit versions in mind, and eventually you will get the feeling of waste... btw very few games use more than 1.5 GBs of ram...

10k HDD is 150 GB, 32bit only supports ~3.1 GB RAM it addresses 4GB.  I will upgrade if it will help the games.

That is why I want to dual boot or swap drive and not run exclusively on 64bit

So now that we have the first question answered, can some one answer the other questions.

Should I swap drives or dual boot?

Are DX10 and DX11 games supporting more RAM?

The main question is it worth it for games for the extra RAM?

Money isn't an issue, I'm not getting rid of 32bit, just adding 64.
