Is school starting this week? Probably that's one of the reasons for the low numbers.

A few weeks away from that.

Amazon has been out of the 40GB SKU over the last week for the first time since the SKU became available in abundance. It's currently only available through independent retailers on the site. Not coincidentally, sales of the MGS4 bundle (the only SKU available direct through Amazon), have risen with the reduced availability of the 40GB SKU. Levels of 40GB SKU stock are unquestionably dwindling as the 80GB Core replacement nears its shipping date. Sales of the PS3 will very likely return to regular sales levels as soon as the $399 80GB Core SKU becomes widely available. |
But regular sales of the PS3 are around 40k. This is what i think people struggle to accept is that it could actually be the MGS4 effect has now died and things have returned to normal. Just because something sells high for a few weeks does not mean it will every week. I think next week we will see the same story as the previous 3, lower PS3 sales and people looking for excuses for them. Then we will get to next month with the 360 price cut and people will say it was expected to be low etc..
re: Wii sales:
I'm not sure if its school, supply or some other factor (retailers holding back) - but it is definitely NOT demand (or just demand).
Reasoning is that demand "slowly" drops - especially when there haven't been major releases for a while. Wii sales are down almost 50% from last week, and that is definitely not what you would expect from one "random" week of weakened demand.
...
On other numbers:
- DS going strong, another 200k sold in just a week.
- PS3 numbers improved "slightly", but if they stay like this for too much longer, its going to be real trouble. Another week of 360 > PS3 worldwide confirmed. At least it will sell more than 120k this week (Leo! ;)
- 360 looking a lot healthier (for now anyway)
- PSP pretty steady, as usual

The Wii is still selling rapidly because there is still an extremely large pool of consumers who have still been unable to simply walk into the retail outlet of their choice and buy one off the shelf (primarily in the NA, where sales have fluctuated the most, directly relative to levels of stock shipped to retail).
Until consumers can consistently buy a Wii at most retail outlets, hardware inventory levels, rather than hot software catalysts, will drive sales trends.
In short, Wii Sports, and to a lesser extent, Wii Fit is STILL selling consoles to non-traditional gamers.
who doesn't love the DS. I wasn't a huge fan of the other handheld consoles excluding the PSP (the PSP is fun, but there are not alot of great games on it compared to the DS)

While I agree with your conclusion, what exactly supports it here? Couldn't there equally be hordes of Wii-hungry traditional gamers finally scoring one every week?
Somewhere in between lies reality.

Oh no, I wasn't trying to argue that the sudden loss of 50,000-odd Wii units was the responsibility of the X360. I just think that maybe a slight number (4,000-5,000) may have been because of that.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
Here is Americas weekly between 360 and Wii:

Notice the sharp ups and downs on Wii, this would signify supply constraits.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
