Sony - We lead, not follow, we don’t want senior citizen gamers, and the Wii is a fad

A portion of a GamesIndustry interview with SCEA’s Scott Steinberg…

Q
: How do you feel PlayStation 3 is performing with regards to the new audiences that have come into gaming in the past couple of years? PS2 has done a pretty good job, but if people are to transition to PS3, what is there for the family and social audiences?

SS
: When it comes to social or family games, there’s no question we’ve got the Rock Bands and Guitar Heroes, and we’ve got third parties supporting us in those ways. We’re going to make a bigger push on Buzz! We’ve got some great ideas that we haven’t announced yet that we think will broaden the casual and social gaming market.

Q: You mentioned the Blu-ray remote, and one of Nintendo’s key successes has been the accessibility of controls - something that’s not daunting to non-native gamers. What are your thoughts on that area?

SS: …I think the notion of that controller is a non-trivial point that you’ve brought up, that control and that familiarity is like comfort food - from my perspective, we lead, we don’t follow. And as a brand, Nintendo’s got their thing, and we’re not trying to get the senior citizen group to get into gaming, we’re looking to convert the PS2 owners and the tens of millions of installed base that were playing DVDs and playing games on their PS2, to now play Blu-ray movies and Blu-ray games with their PS3.

…So we’re all about looking at ways to keep that bar high, and from a peripheral standpoint the Blu-ray remote helps people get in and out of their digital media, but we’d never consider iterating off of existing competitive technology - because we think that’s a fad and that’s not the way we approach product development. It’s not the way we approach the marketing or the branding of PlayStation.

Gotta love Sony PR :P

I think the bolded part should be the title. The guy wasn't saying the what the title states.

  Unleash The Beast!

End of 2011 Sales: Wii = 90mil, 360 = 61mil, PS3= 60mil

Good lord, it's like all the work they did to humble themselves after the 2006/early 2007 debacles has been undone.

MS may be king of NPD damage control as they change monthly what they decide to brag about as it best suits them but Sony can't be touched in overall spin as almost every single interview these days makes me laugh.

Sony leads, not follows? In the sense of what? Like lemmings jumping from a cliff into a sea of losses and third parties follow?

Sony leads not follows....of course thats why the PS3 is in 3rd place and the Wii is in 1st place.

...The irony!

Super lol!

I think the bolded part should be the title. The guy wasn't saying the what the title states.

It's sensationalization.

I blame the media outlet that reported this.  And Soriku, for copy/pasting the title when he really doesn't call the Wii a fad.

Sony sure liked Nintendo's analog stick enough to copy it back in the Day...

But of course they lead...

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Also.... "we’re not trying to get the senior citizen group to get into gaming"

WTF!!!!

So what exactly is he saying? I read a low of words there but no actual direction.

I mean its all about the brand according to them, this is their problem - attitude.

They seem to think that now they have built their brand they can just exploit it forever and everyone will lap it up. They're in 3rd place, proof that enough that they can't.

A brand is an asset not a bloody work horse!

I get the same thing when reading this post.

Strange :/

Yes.

They liked it so much, they put two of them on the Controller, not one.

"but we’d never consider iterating off of existing competitive technology - because we think that’s a fad and that’s not the way we approach product development."

Did you guys read that properly????
They didn't call the Wii a fad at all, they said that they would never copy thier competition's technology because they think that approach of copying in general is a fad, as in the "approach itself" not the product to be copied from..... they're not calling the Wii a fad at all, at they most they would be insulting the MS more than anything for the many un-original things at their e3....
