Here is an article run by Forbes that talks about the next generation races and Shigeru Iwata confirms that they are currently working on their next generation console. While Iwata did state that it is too early in the cycle to talk about what they are planning for the Wii's successor, but he did say that, "he doesn't view the hardware as particularly interesting. But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games."
Does this mean that Nintendo will shy away from HD graphics like it did this generation or stay with older hardward to keep the system price low? Well, one can only guess at the moment. However, Iwata did state, "With the company's huge success with the current-generation console, consumers are going to expect a lot from it whenever the successor to the Wii is unveiled.
"Every hardware needs some revolutionary features," Iwata says. "This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can't tell.
"It's natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different," he continues. "If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it's going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again."
While I don't expect to see any super computer leave the factories at Nintendo, I do believe that they will deliver on their promise to create a machine which will be fun and addictive, and that is what video games are all about, FUN.
