Forums - Sales - SONY own Australia

After reading what the Sony guy said, he did say that the PS3 was the top selling next gen console every week since launch.
It is also known that Sony doesn't consider the Wii as a next gen console. And the guy didn't mention the Wii.
The PS3 is actually the best selling next gen console in Australia since its launch, if you just forget the Wii in your chart.

Just a weird thought:

So, Wii sold 100,000 since December Launch.
Ps3 has sold 50,000 since March. Just lost to the Wii for weekly sales since then.
The Wii sold 50,000 Dec-End Feb
The Wii has sold 50,000 March-Date Posted. (Mid June?)
The Ps3 has sold 50,000 March-Date posted.

So it is selling, but not at Wii numbers, from launch or otherwise, but very close in launch frame at least. (50k in 3 months versus 50k in 3 and a half months). Either way, it's actually a good thing for the PS3.

See Ya George.

At least following a comedians own jokes makes his death easier.

A real good question would be why didn't they announce this news last week so they wouldn't have to say the whole "except last week". Seems smarter to me.

That's what you call, dropping the ball.

Yeah the "except last week" part just ruined the whole chance of making that article generate tons of page hits from rabid Sony fans that would finally have something to spin. Saying "except last week" just lets us know the PS3's launch buzz (that it had in EVERY country at launch) has no simmered down and the Wii is selling ahead of it again (the same way its doing in just about EVERY other country).

Well said, Xyrax. You saw it coming.

Crunch the numbers yourself ...

Sony claimed 27,000 PS3 systems were sold in the first 10 days of the PS3's launch; it has been 14 weeks since the PS3's launch and now they're claiming a total of 50,000 units. This means that they have averaged 3,571.4 systems per week including the launch and 1,289.5 systems per week not including the launch.

Nintendo claimed 32,000 systems in their launch week were sold and it has been 29 weeks and 2 days since their launch; they have claimed that they have sold an additional 68,000 systems since then. This works out to being 3,414.6 systems per week including the launch and 2,404.0 systems per week not including the launch.

The PS3 should have a massive advantage in the non-launch numbers because (typically) a system has much higher average weekly sales for a while after launch than they have 6 months in; and yet its average weekly sales (outside of launch) are noticeably lower than the Wii. The likely hood that the PS3 is outselling the Wii on a weekly basis is pretty small, and it should be obvious why the PS3 will not break 100,000 units faster than the Wii.

 QFT

I don't think any Nintendo fans said that Sony botched the '50,000' number, that might be correct, it's the LIES in the rest of the press release that piss people off. Sony saying they are selling the best on a weekly basis when they look at the total number of consoles sold during that period INCLUDING launch.

It is not possible for it to be selling better week on week if the numbers are correct, because Wii sold roughly 50,000 consoles in the same amount of time since the PS3 has been launched, yet the PS3 got  the LAUNCH in those numbers, it's kinda simple to see what Sony are doing.

Either way, fanboys of either side want to believe spin one way or another, the above quote was quoted for it's absolute truth, there is no way to refute that information because it's just how it is.

Well done to ioi for getting the number so accruate.

Also...

Wii had sold 68,000 units in its first four months

According to this report

PS3 has sold 50,000 units in its first four months

Who's faster?

Lets give this thread some PERSPECTIVE.

So Sony sold better in the period including their launch on a weekly basis if you include the launch window numbers... fact of the matter is, they are tracking WAY behind everyone else.

Pure and simple, any PS3 fans want to tell me how you can justify this ANY OTHER WAY?  Nintendo fans also? Sony DID sell more during the window since Sony's launch, that is a fact, but Sony saying that it is 'the best' in such a round about way pisses me off because they are the biggest lying SPINDOCTORS of the world.

Well said OriGin!

As for the numbers themselves, I'm suprised by the neck and neck sales of the 360 and Wii. So what is the case in Australia, is the 360 selling better there? or is the Wii selling worse?

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I think it's pretty neck and neck in AUS between 360 and Wii, that's the feeling I get, I think Wii could be doing much better than it is here, it got off to a roaring start but it feels like it has slowed lately, however some recent advertising has been pretty good so I'd say it should pick up from here on out for the rest of the year.
