I wish the people at EB/Gamestop would actually TRY to do their jobs...

It's not their job to try to move consoles.

actually EB/GameStop Managers do have a reason to try to sell the PS3. Sony is holding a reward contest. For each console sold they get like 10 points, the manager at the end of the contest with the highest points in the state gets rewarded like 500 more points, and the the manager who sells the most in the whole country gets like 5000 points and a new car. The points can be redeemed for prizes on a rewards site. I forget the link but I talked to the manager at my EB Games. He said the prizes range from CD Players to Car Audio to a PS3 to Extreme Gaming PCs ($5000+ computers).

Hence why your normal employee doesn't give a crap if they don't sell another PS3. The managers can't bribe them with anything to sell more and they more than likely don't care if the manager gets bonus points. Most people who work at Gamestop/EBGames are fairly miserable and just don't care (after the initial excitement of OMG I work in a game store!!!!!).

lol then they EB games and Gamestops by you are really really bad. The store by me is awesome. The manager lets his employees rent things from the store. So basically they get to play every game and never have to spend a dime.

Every EB/Gamestop lets their employees rent things. The policy is one used item at a time and for no more than 4-5 days.

My favourite overheard VG conversation was on a bus

This guy had gotten a DS and NSMB. He opens up the DS and says

What the f*ck!? It has two screens!
His friend says:  You didn't know that?
To which he replies: I don't know anything about it, but it's f*cking Mario man!

During the bus ride home, I'd occaisionally hear him say "Dude there's this pen thing on it!" and " F*CKING MARIO MAN! over and over again

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Actually, I have the largest Gamestop in Texas (and I'm fairly sure one of the largest ones), it's just that it really is a crap job. You constantly have people asking about games, do you like x game or y game better, what system is better, is z game out yet, if not when will it be out, angry mothers, little snots that hang out there all day, little snots that try to talk to you because they for some reason look up to you, little snots that think they're better than you, ect.

Unless you're a 360 achievement score, shit pay + insane annoyances + free rental isn't worth it. I haven't worked there (though was depserate enough for a job at one point while waiting for people to get back to me I asked for an application) but know plenty of people that have and it just sucks. Actually, every retail job sucks.

Ummm..... Interesting experience, I guess. I was expecting to hear something about the clerk telling the person not to get it...

That happens a lot according to people and I would be really pissed if that happened with me or around me. If I heard a clerk trying to convince someone to get a 360 instead of a PS3 I would literally do everything in my argumentative power to point out how good a deal the PS3 is and I'm sure I would out argue the average EB clerk lol

It's probobly never wise to try to get people to buy a console. The reason he might segest a 360 verses a PS3 is that for one, he sees them sell, not you. So he nows that sell=good. The other is 400<600. Which is why it's never good idea to try and convice people to spend a lot of money on something when you get jack out of it beyond fanboy glory. You could be the reason the man buys a product he doesn't like. So let him make his own choice.

So you're telling me a clerk convincing a buyer to buy somehting cheaper (360) over something more expensive (PS3) is good for the store? It's not which makes it even more problematic, pointing out how said person is really a fanboy...

Well if we're going ot be that ruthless about it, then it absolutely makes sense to sell the 360 instead, as my store makes more money per 360 (about 5 dollars!) than it does per PS3 (less than a dollar).

But in reality, the difference for the store is minimal and it actually is in the best interest of the store to simply make the consumer as happy as possible so they will continue shopping in our store. If the consumer really does seem conflicted, I point out the strengths of each system to the best of my ability. Forcing them to buy my console of choice would often seem abrasive and could lead to unhappy customers when they get home.

Exactly; there are rather perverse incentives at work. Without a meaningful incentives program, employees are only going to try to do well enough to not get fired. If they work their asses off selling consoles, they make minimum wage. If they're surly, lazy, and generally unhelpful, they make minimum wage and they don't have to do as much.

From a "what's good for the consumer" standpoint, I could see a clerk trying to convince someone who seems to want a PS3, but who doesn't know much about it, to buy a 360. It's simple fact that it's a more popular console in the US market, and size of the difference between the two means that it's almost certainly more popular among former PS2 casuals. It's apparently the case that knowledgeable casuals tend to opt for the 360, so it's entirely justifiable to try to convince ignorant casuals to go the same way.

Thats totally right. A casual gamer won't spend $660+tax to play the latest GTA game. It all boils down to the price. The 360 is alot closer to a mainstream price right now (and will probably be closer, this holiday season).

I have heard sales people telling customers that the PS3 doesnt up-convert dvds or games. goes to show that sales dont know dick

Sales people don't know about firmware upgrades. :P

'650$ with tax?'

Wow, I never thought about sales tax on a PS3... that's like a whole game.   Thank god there's no sales tax in Oregon.

They do if they just visit the official websites, little effort, but such a major issue for your expertise. If I would work in a game store I would inform myself about all the details.

When I called a game store about the adapter issue for my WII, really the guy said.... yes I think you can use the European AC adapter with your Japanese WII as the WII is regionfree anyway... Ex...cuse me??!!
