Forums - Sony - Witness to a PS3 non-purchase

ckmlb said:

As you can see it was a pretty weird situation. The guy literally changed his mind on the spot even tough he knew it was 600 dollars before, he hesitated and decided not to get the PS3. I was thinking of jumping in at that point and asking him if he has an HDTV. If he answered yes, I was gonna tell him the PS3 has an HD DVD player in it too, as it didn't seem he knew much about it, but I held back.

I mean the store clerk should have done that if he was smarter or more dedicated to selling it, since the guy was literally on the fence and he definitely looked like he was going to get it before changing his mind.

Anyway the story is just an anecdote nothing more, but it was very interesting for me cause I was witnessing the whole convo, standing there next to the guy.

Blu-ray Disc player, heh, I know you know the diff, just messing with ya

Strange, I would have interjected, but that's just me.... I'm in sales in a way and you wouldn't believe how many people I talk to nearly on a daily basis where I act like I'm changing my mind on something, just to see if they try to convince me(I like doing this at Gamestop's and EB Games, acting like I'm thinking about the 360, if you know me this is funny)... I usually research my purchase pretty thoroughly so I know what I want, I just like to hear what they are or aren't willing to tell me, as for the 360, one guy went so far as to SWEAR that MGS4 was coming to it...... I was like "I think I've talked to you before" (on here) LOL

On Monday I went to EB to get a copy of the Darkness, only to find out the game comes out the next day.

While I was waiting in line to ask the store clerks about it, this guy had a PS3 box handed to him and I was curious to check out if he seemed like someone who plays games (if that is possible to spot) and so he put the console down and asked the guy how much it comes up to. This is how the conversation went from there:

'600$'

'650$ with tax?'

'Yeah pretty much'

Reaches and takes out his wallet.

'And what game does this come with?'

'It doesn't come with any games.'

'No games with it?'

'No'

'Alright...' waits a little 'Well I'll be back later in the week and get it.'

'Ok...'

'I'll definitely be back later.' Walks off.

I ABSOLUTELY would have told him all about the Blu-Ray player. It's a definite selling point for adults. You're right, that's precisely what that clerk should  have done.

I wouldn't say that I'm an adult the type that is more likely to spend that kinda of money but i don't see either the blu-ray or HD-DVD as a better then a regular DVD. I mean only a few movies not all movies are on the formats and my regular Sony Tube Television is practically brand new and HD TV is out of the question.

I wish the people at EB/Gamestop would actually TRY to do their jobs...

You're right, if you don't have an HDTV, and there isn't one in the foreseeable future, then no BD isn't important. I don't know if you've actually seen a BD or HDDVD if you don't think they are better than DVD(all you have to do is find a BD with SD res special features and flip from that to the reg movie, and it's like WOWZER). Anyways, if you DO have a HDTV and you like movies then it's a BIG selling point......... I love the blu-ray =)

I meant a player of HD movies you know both Blu Ray player and HD DVD player play HD movies. It's easier to tell someone who doesn't know about the stuff that it's a player of HD DVDs as in movies lol

He looked like a guy with cash that wanted to get the PS3 just for the hell of it, didn't come off as knowing much about PS3 or games as he didn't know what games were on PS3 or that it didn't come with a game. Basically he was a casual gamer/guy with money who wants a cool gadget...

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

IF you don't have an HD TV then of course Blu Ray player doesn't matter, but if you do then it's a huge plus. And there is a very big difference. Not as big as from VHS to DVD but still very big and much better looking.

Ummm..... Interesting experience, I guess. I was expecting to hear something about the clerk telling the person not to get it...

That happens a lot according to people and I would be really pissed if that happened with me or around me. If I heard a clerk trying to convince someone to get a 360 instead of a PS3 I would literally do everything in my argumentative power to point out how good a deal the PS3 is and I'm sure I would out argue the average EB clerk lol

I would say you could justify the value, but if the person just wants to play GTA IV, for example, I dont think you can justify the $200-$300 price difference. Maybe you could convice them about the Red Ring failure, but most people think that will not happen to them -(My friend, who owns 2 360's, didn't even know about the Red Ring).

Ckmlb i definitely agree with you i know there's a big difference when one compares the two HD formats to a DVD but the fact that there are two formats and and that I need an HDTV to get the full effect. A regular person would rather wait till prices come down or when the have an HD-DVD and blu-ray combo.

I think most people on this board would be excellent sales-people, vrs the average joe that works at those stores. I often find myself grimacing  (and trying hard not to interject) when overhearing sales people/consumers at game stores.

Especially when parents pick up some clueless game for their kids (based on brand)... groan!

Nocturnal is helping companies get cheaper game ratings in Australia:

No. The funniest thing I heard was (@Wal-Mart):

Lady: What is a Wii?
Clerk: It is an Xbox your kids can play.

That perception is bad for both Nintendo and Microsoft, trying to drop the 'kiddie' image and trying to appeal to the 'casual', respectively.

I won't even list the stuff I have heard about the PS3 ("It's a BR player which doubles as a computer. Oh, and it can play games")
