Forums - Sales - Looking for PS3 production cost information

I believe in their report for the Jan-March quarter, Sony mentioned that they were losing ~$120 per PS3. Does anyone have a link to this? Am I just making that up? Any help would be appreciated!

I don't remember any specific number, in fact they were always pretty secretive as far as I remember.

The only thing they've been saying for a while is that they only expect to start breaking even towards the end of the fiscal year.

I didn't read this and I wouldn't think Sony would announce something like this. But would be interesting to know just how much money Sony is losing each time they sell a PS3.

As of January, it was around $400 for the non-bc model.  Prices should have come down by then, and they should be making money now, or close to it.

$400 in January

Profitable by August

@WiiStation360: Those are analyst reports, which are obviously contradicted by Sony's declarations.

You know, the same analysts who say things like "Nintendo will launch a new handheld this year".

Probably almost break even by now, in terms of production costs.

In terms of overall costs (including fixed costs and variable costs), then they are still losing money per unit.

Note that "cheaper" Blu Ray players can now be purchased for under $300 in some instances.

afaik, no actual numbers have been reported since those (probably wrong) numbers we heard early this year.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

How much more than the cost of a Premium 360 should the PS3 cost to manufacture?

The main cost difference would be the Cell & Blu-Ray. Blu-ray prices should have substantially dropped since launch. Maybe +$80 for the blu-ray and +$30 for the cell? These are just guesses.

@ Bodhesatva

If you wish, check out the Sony prediction thread I made.
With the numbers in the analysis, the assumed PS3 hardware loss numbers were quite "accurate" with regards to conforming to reported financial statements.

You can see that they are quite close. Basically rounding error differences.
