I haven't heard of this one until this thread. Maybe Mr. Carmack has gone public in an attempt to force Microsoft's hand on the multi-disc royalty issue.... Or, maybe he even went to Microsoft and he threatened to go nuclear. MS maybe called his bluff. Who knows. Business can be ugly...

Kn I think he wants the media to blow up so MS would be forced to allow him to put the game on more than 2 disks.Casue in this genre MS doesnot allow more than 2 disks unlike RPG.his new  engine is 20 GB alone(for this game and Doom 4)so he needs to do this once so that MS would not cause problems for doom 4 either in near future.

Forcing MS to do anything will be worth the price of admission. This clown Carmack is about to get own3d. News at 11.

No "+1" Even though this post deserves it. You took away the hot chick avatar! :(

so you mean he can't get what he wants??MS just don't want to make it a trend for every company to follow,,,like Mass effect 2 on 3 disks,,,,but I think they will allow this guy,,,,only time will tell.

This is Carmack.  He was on the freakin' Xbox board of technology, and is likely on the 360's.  His input that was crucial to MS making such a developer-friendly architecture.  They'll give in, eventually.

Not really, is relevant to this aproach (royalty fees), but in general, he never said that spliting should be tech issue, is more a money issue...

I imagine no one would like 4 disks for a shooting game.you might disagree but general public if given the choice, would choose one disk over 4 .

But thats just preferences, FFVII came on 3 disc, and still was a success, this end up on personal choice...

ff7 was a hella long RPG with ps1 graphics and lot of FMV... not a full HD game.

if developers are choosing to mandatory/optional install mean is the future there must be an advance to it, remenber ps3 also read dvds, but they not releasing games like metal gear solid 4 in 6 DVDS dual layer

Here we go again :)

MGS4 is not a full 50GB game there is no proof of it...

Second, the issue with the space is this, they are pushing really high res textures:

"The demonstration with which the new game engine was shown had 20 GB of texture data (using a more advanced MegaTexture approach using textures with up to 128000x128000 pixel resolution) and a completely dynamically changeable world."

No other game use this feature...

Third... why sony would allow to launch games on DVDs if they are promoting BR???

other than kojima saying it was. Especially since he stated that there wasn't enough room to put more than 1 language on the disc.

Kojima said MGS4 filled up a single-layered BD-Rom, thus requiring a dual-layered BD-Rom.  I don't recall him ever saying the game filled up a dual-layered BD-Rom.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if it did, given his fetish for uncompressed audio.

I read at beyond that it was 40.5 gig.

no he said that there wasnt enough room on a 50 gigabyte disc for more than 1 language, and that they had to cut some things because of space restrictions. Again on a 50 gigabyte disc.

There was multiple articles about it.. this is one of them

I don't think that it will really do anything for the PS3, they'll use the same textures that fit onto a DVD9 for both versions. If developers are so keen to bring the PS3 version up to parity with the Xbox360, I doubt they will do anything that will makes the PS3 versions noticeably better. It goes both ways... ya?

PSH no.  The man said it himself.

Sorry Squill.  I buy all my multiplat shooter / FPS games on the 360.  This time however, PS3 has the clear advantage.  He will not compromise the quality.  You shouldn't be too concerned, don't you own a PS3?

Console Agnostic since 2001.

thts funny im happy to owne a ps3
