I'll agree that in its current form, a Zune with gaming capaibilities would be as good as the iPod with games... i.e. pathetic. Could MS produce a decent handheld that could do both? Maybe. But I don't see them doing it.
On the other hand, MS has a solid platform for smart cell phones - Windows Mobile. By leveraging their cell phone platform, combining it with the Zune, and adding gaming, MS could have something worthwhile. But MS wouldn't be targeting Nintendo or Sony with such a device -- that would be squarely aimed at Apple and the iPhone.
I agree with HappySqurriel that we'll see MS work with their third parties to develop improved smart phones or see them come out with their own in two years. And it will be that platform that MS aims at portable gaming.
Numbers are like people. Torture them enough and you can get them to say anything you want.
